Toaster, as T.J. said, it looks like you have the best intentions but why don't you re-name the thread as "first build" or something similar?


All the tutorials I have seen on this site so far only make sense for people who already know what it is about, which defies the point, they leave so many unanswered questions its ridiculous.

Can you clarify what are the "unanswered questions"? If its about basic electronics, there are many site outs there that are good for learning basic electronics; I didn't know much about electronics when I first started but Google was my friend. :yh: If its about test loads or something the search function works "OK". You might have to sift through some threads but the answer is out there...

After setting the driver with the test load, I have heard of people shorting something, is that the driver? Do you just arc across the + and - outs on the driver? Thanks

Yup. This is just to discharge and juice still left in the capacitor. You can use basically anything metal to touch the "+ and - outs" on the driver. If I don't have leads already soldered on I usually use a flat-head.

You don't have to short the leads if you disconnect the battery BEFORE you disconnect the dummy load. ^_^
*shorting the cap(s) is still a good practice though*

Heres my order, Please Debug:)

1: Take Microboost out of packaging and make solder connections for the upper range.
2: Connect test load to driver in series.
3: Connect power supply (18650 with taped leads) to driver.
4: Test with DMM in mV across resistor and set to 1A
5: Disconnect power supply
6: Disconnect test Load
7: Solder diode + to + on driver and - to -
8: Solder unused case pin to - on Battery terminal
9: Solder the + battery terminal to the.... (Stock driver)?
10: Insert Battery And turn on..

Thats right, aint it?

The more easy way, is just solder an extra resistor, any value from 1 Kohm to 4,7 Kohm, 1/4 or 1/8 W or also SMD, on the output (practically, in parallel with the LD) ..... can be left in place permanently, cause the value don't take any appreciable extra current from the LD (1mA in the worse case, with 1Kohm value), and at the same time is enough for discharge the capacitors in few seconds under the dangerous level ;)

(short the driver output terminals to be sure the output caps are discharged)
(Use a grounded ESD strap to protect against ESD blowing your LD)

9: Solder the + battery terminal to the.... (Stock driver)?
10: Insert Battery And turn on..

Thats right, aint it?(isn't it)

Is the 2,7k ohm resistor I see in all your drawings, the one you are talking about? I am making a High power test load with parts from Allied Electric.

10 1N5404 3 A Diodes
1 2,7 KOhms Wire Wrapped Resistor
1 5W Ohms Wire Wrapped Resistor
1 20 Pin Breakaway Headers
1 Gold Jumper

I can not however, Find a board. I have looked up Circuit Boards but I get like 1 million results so. :/ Lol

Is there a technical name? Not Breadboard, A strip board has lanes, so maybe that..... Hmmm

I keep searching for strip board but All I get is bread boards

They Do, I was trying to find everything on that site. (Allied Electronics) It was easier to find things. The site you directed me to was more confusing. I got boards at home, just would like some better ones. Thanks for the link though!!

Also, for diodes and resistors, they (RS) only carry about 2 diodes per type so they are pretty much useless.

Just bought 2 2900mAh AW protected 18650s and a WF-139. Damn this hobby gets expensive :)

Ok, I have to put this in here. I have asked a ridicules amount of questions to the Jayrob. And he answered them. I can not explain how much help he has been. I feel comfortable with my knowledge now to build it :)

Wow a testload diagram other than Dr Lava's!!! or rkstrs. And a good one at that! +1 I want to build that the FlaminPyro way! Only test load I have needed untill now... I need a new power meter now Laserbee! I maxed this one out... 2.5W+ with G2 and a H1600in copper aixis mount in a guidesman with 1.8W mogasm linear... new batteries were the killer at full charge I got the 2.5W but only for 35-45 secs after the batteries wore down a bit it could run constant at 2.3W!!! This thing doesnt Burn! it Ignites! My test plastic was on fire in 7-10secs. CWAZZY!
