Canabilized my first DVD-RW Laser Diode

So I got my first diode. This thing is BRIGHT when coupled to 2 AA's. But it's scattered all over the place, not a "beam". What do you guys recommend to focus the beam? I want to add this into a spare minimag that I have sitting around.

Thanks.

Laser modules & spare lenses : Modwerx Shop

Im not sure if the standard aixiz module will work with your host. If your host can fit a 12mm diameter inside it will.

Are you using a driver with your diode? I have no idea what kind of diode you have so you should make sure it has a 5.6mm diameter.

I love my avatar too :)

then you are better buying a driver if you don't want your diode to die in seconds, It's even strange that your diode survived to the setup you made lol

Why would it have died? DVD-RW diodes run at 1.5v, i was running it with 2 daisy chained AA's at 1.2v.

even if you have the right voltage, your current (mA) is going to be unstable.

As a new member, read the stickies and tutorials about building a laser. Use the search button to find tons of info here.

How much current were you delivering to the diode? That is the key. Make sure you have good connections between your meter, the diode and the cells.

Again read, read , read before asking questions which have been answered hundreds of times. Also, What does "daisy chain" mean in electronics. Do you mean series or parallel connection?

Yes yes, I am familiar with forum etiquette. Daisy chain means series connection

so.. putting 2 AA's at 1.2V each in series..

that gives you.. 2.4V..
your comment about it running on 1.5V doesn't make much sense?

This will teach you why you need a driver: http://laserpointerforums.com/f36/basic-faqs-read-before-posting-38275.html

I suggest you do a bit more reading before progressing with your project any further... Had you read anything at all you'd already know that lasers do not magically collminate or focus themselves, you need to provide a housing with a lens. You'd also have read many times over that a minimag is a poor choice of host for a first time builder.. There's very little room inside for a driver, it's a tough build. You've basically covered every single newbie mistake in your thread here, before you destroy your laser you should read up a bit and learn from the mistakes of the countless hundreds of noobs that have come here asking about hooking a laser up to AA's for their minimag kipkay build and wondering why it doesn't focus to a beam.

Good luck, and welcome to the forums!
