Default Can Someone help give info so I can test Diode?

Hi,

I am still trying to figure out whats going on with my laser. I Would like to test the diode to rule out that its dead. Does anyone know what voltage this diode runs at ? What about current does that matter when I just try to connect the + and the - with the correct voltage ?

Here is the link to the diode+diver

400mW 532nm Single Dot High Power Diode Green Laser Module (2.9-4.2V)

Thanks,

The diode needs a fixed current and probably has a voltage drop of ~2.2V. Just connecting + an - with any fixed voltage can give either nothing or a blown up diode, there's not much in between. You need a driver to power a laser diode.
The module you link to already has a driver, so it should would by applying a constant voltage to the driver which then will take care of the constant current.

Thanks Bluefan. I will give it a go. I wanted to make sure that I bypassed the driver because I was not sure it was working properly.

I am afraid my laser might be dead.....

Vrolijk kerstfeest en groetjes uit Los Angeles

What you have there is a DPSS module (driver>diode>crystals>lens). Not just a diode.
Have you tried to power that module yet?
I recommend using a +3.0V powersupply (or two AA batteries) and connecting the Negative (-) to the spring and the Positive (+) to the metal part of the module, then pressing the "on" button on the module.

btw: Woon je in Los Angeles?

HI ASh,

Thanks, I did try a 3 volt battery but nothing gives.... I tries to measure the diode resistance with a DMM , but got no reading either. So I took the whole thing apart down to the diode itself. Just for fun. It just doesnt work anymore .... for sure now! HA Ha!

I guess its f*$*ed then.

Thanks anyway.

JA ik woon inderdaad in LA County (Azusa)

Measuring a diode's resistance with a DMM is a careless thing to do. The DMM measures by applying a current. If the testing leads are not connected it charges the DMM's filtering caps which can produce current spikes that damage or kill diodes. Depending on the voltage range the DMM uses it may even be able to supply too much reverse voltage if you connect is that way. Besides that a laser diode is a very non-linear component, do not expect a resistance measurement to make sense.

The most likely thing that happened is a blown diode, it can be replaced. Depending on the price of that laser you can consider it worth the trouble. It looks to me as a good module. I offer a repair service at my website, but if you're declaring this module dead I'm interested in it's remains (particularly the crystal set).

En hoezo kan iedereen nederlands hier? LA ligt hier niet in de buurt.
