Default Button cell CR2032 safe for testing DVD16x LD?

I just learned the hard way that you need a driver. :'(

Yesterday I managed to extract a LD from a TDK 16x DVD writer and decided to connect to a 2x AAA Nimh batteries.
Had a some fun burning stuff up and then it stopped working :'(

I just ordered some stuff from senkat (hope you're reading this ), but in the meantime, I've manged today to get another faulty DVD writer to extract the LD.

I was wondering if it would be safe to use a CR2032 to test the LD without a driver?
Since it's rating of continuous power is around 220mAh I believe?

I'm still sourcing the parts for the driver. Won't happen till weekend.

Hook it up direct to the 2032 and it WILL die instantly. I know it's hard, but just wait and build a proper driver.

just because a battery is rated at 220mah doesn't mean it will have a peak current of that same number. case in point. a deep cycle car battery that rated at 150ah does not mean the peak will be 150 amps, its peak will be around 400 to 700 amps depending on temperature among other things.

Oops, sorry my bad.
It's rated as 200mA and "continuous drain" to be more precise.
Not peak.

Anyways, I'm building my driver tonight
So I'll skip this whole CR2023 thing.

Thanks all for the help guys

I'm pretty sure a 2032 is only rated for 20mA continuous not 200mA.

*Edit after testing*
A short circuit test showed that a single 2032 peaks at about 670mA dropping to 150mA after 1/8 second and to 40mA after 2 seconds. Sorry I don't have a scope to graph this on, I'm just using the peak function on my DMM. I think the inital peak is even higher that 670mA but I have no way to show it.

Can someone else with the right tools and a few minutes give it a shot?
