why would the diode blow? And how do I check the diode? its inside the casing, and I have no experience with leadlights

I recently bought a blu-ray leadlight from dave, and I am quite happy with it. It outputs around 75 mws, and was working fine till a little while ago. What happen is that suddenly, one day i turned it on, and the light was dim, and when I focused the lens, instead of a purple dot, I got a purple ring around the dot, and a dim green box. (see attached picture)
The batts are 10440's, but Im sure they stil work, because I used them in my burning red, and its really bright and burns great.
The lense is also clean.
Any suggestions?
I might send it back to dave to see if he can fix it, but I want to try myself first

Sounds like a blown diode, but to be sure, check all of the connections to the batteries, driver, and diode itself.

its still bright when i take the axis acrilic lens off. but when I put it on it like dims...

I wrote this in a PM, but I'll post it here for others who may experience a similar condition. Recharge or replace the batteries. The red diode only takes 3V, while the violet takes 5V. It is quite possible that the driver has dropped out of regulation for the violet diode. With a linear driver, the same batteries that won't drive a violet can still drive a red.

Peace,

thanks dave. I measured the voltage, and the batts still put out 7.3-.4 volts. so is it still the batteries?

I agree with Dave, I have seen that green square more than a few times when a blu ray is under voltage. Did you measure the battery voltage under load?

I believe it is. Your measurement was simply with the batteries being measured, correct? The batteries are already right at the edge of having enough voltage left. You would have to measure the batteries with the laser "lit" to know what it was getting under load. It will be less than just the batteries alone.

Recharge or replace the batteries before doing anything else.

dave

I have a couple of these in stock:http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4151
I do not make much off of these, just enough to cover the original-price and inventory-costs. I usually only offer them as a service to customers who need them quickly. Let me know if I can help.
