two lasers

Ok, so way before I saw this forum, I started doing projects with lasers. I managed to get my hands on an old DVD and CD burner and when I took it apart, I found TWO laser doides inside. Unfortunately, I don't have the name of the burner or the relative location of the diodes in the burner, what I do know is that they are laser diodes of some sorta and one of them refuses to leave the metal ring around it that screwed it into place on the burner. Now, is one for DVD's and the other for CD's or is one a red laser and the other is IR? This really confused me at the time.

Yes one of them is a red laser and the other is a ir laser for cds, when you power them up to see which is which dont have it facing your eye, they tiny red glow the ir one emits is not good for your eye, the one that shines really bright red is the one you want.

Thanks, I guess I can just use the IR one for when I'm bored at home with a Night Vision camera or something. Or to really amuse myself during performances with a night-vision camera.
