I have been playing with different lenses out of torn down projectors I have laying around today and found a interesting pair that make a beam @ 25 feet is about 8mm out of the aperture and 10mm on the wall 25 feet away. Check this out.

Holy crap those are amazing diodes. If I didn't just drop a pile of money on 589 and 473 handhelds I'd be all over one of those. Maybe some day....

I want to build a labby with one of these! Will have to wait until your driver is done and maybe get a package deal? 
I never thought my 3A power supply would ever be not enough to power a diode! (High power bars and DPSS pumps excluded)

Is a handheld too far fetched? What tests have been done with the handheld sized lenses we have available? If all we have is some junk lens that will put a 5in dot on a wall 15ft away, we might have to do a lot of customization. 1-2in wide focus rings with big PJ lenses in them? Seems impractical, not impossible though. Guess we'll have to see.
Personally I see nothing against lab units. Though I'm in a dorm, on base, and not allowed to shine into the sky, so it doesn't affect me personally..
Anyone have one of those C-mount lab sinks available on fleebay? I'm sure they can be used well with a TEC, plus the focus lens is way in the front (about 4-5cm). Would be nice to see tests done with those, as they're our most obtainable source for labby sinks.

It would be sweet to have it in a handheld. I just like being forced to use it one more "controlled" environtment at 5W. Plus duty cycles would suck unless to had one of those giant spot lights as a host! Haha

This new laser diode is intriguing. It's pulled me out of nearly two years of doing little related to lasers, to regaining my interest one again in this hobby.
For those interested, I found a lens on surplus-shed which appears to be perfect for this particular laser diode. One of it's designed wavelengths is 656nm, which is right in the range for this laser. It also has a 50mm focal length (IIRC, someone mentioned 50-60mm focal length as being optimal), is small enough to be put in a handheld, and large enough that it wouldn't clip the laser beam.

I've been away for a bit.. had a lot of developments happening that have kept me extremely busy. But I randomly noticed this thread and I decided I had to have a look.. it's really awesome that LPF is still among the first places that these experiments are taking place. I've always loved this place for that.. Awesome find Lazeerer! Very exciting possibilities..

I just came across this thread. Some thoughts:
- You shouldn't run c-mount diodes at a temperature below the dew point. The diode is exposed to the environment and condensation will damage it.
- I have a box full of really nice Wavelength Electronics PLD-5000 5A diode drivers. Too big for a handheld, but great for a lab setup. 5A Laser Diode Driver Wavelength Electronics PLD 5000 Fast Analog Modulation | eBay If the diode voltage is 3.5V or less, these will work with a 5V power supply. Otherwise you need 5V for the logic section and another rail that's at least the diode voltage + 1.5V. OP, PM me and I'll send you a couple to play with.
- Is there a spec sheet for these diodes? I'd like to buy 1 or 2, but would like to know what the manufacturer has to say about them before hammering them.
