First I want to apologize for not having a full fledged review with lots of pics and specs...But truth be told, I don't have the time nor initiative to make a big review. I had good intentions, but with everything else I have going on, it just wasn't meant to be. So I still had a few key specs that I wanted to brush up on and share, so if any of you have any questions ask. But there is certain testings I just didn't get around to.
So lets start with what I do know.
Appearance- The chromed Pulsar is anything else but pure awesome looking. You think you may know how it looks from the pictures, but even the best picture cannot possibly describe how much of a beauty it is. The chrome is smooth, shiny, and vivid. It holds a certain finesse that just cant be put into words. The laser etched 'Wicked Lasers P125' writing alone makes staring at it something that is almost more fun than using it, and has a almost hypnotic like effect. You can easily end up holding it and marveling on its sheer awesome looks for quite some time.
You've all seen the pics, and thats as much as I can describe it. Lets just say it looks sweet...sickly sweet.
One disadvantage with its nice shiny surface, is that you almost don't want to not even use it for fear of putting fingerprints on it. And you will end up cleaning it more than any other laser you have ever owned.
Feel - Just like its looks its feel is very nice. The chrome makes it so it stays in your hand, and is not really slick and slippery to my knowledge. Which is different from its cousin, the all black no clip Fusion...which seems to always find a way to slide out of your hands.
The button is also very good. Its flush with the surface of the laser, making it a streamlined butterfly. It presses down easily, and has a very nice click to it.
The disadvantage here is you can easily confuse its angle, meaning sometimes you may take it out backwards and not be able to find the button for a little bit. But once you find it, its pretty unmistakable.
Use/specs - Ok, I really didn't get around to much testing other than laserchecking it, using it, and duty-cycle. So I will brush up on these.
Use - When you turn it on, it is a nice cherry red. Hard to be mistaken for a measly 5mW pointer. But with any red laser, its still not that bright looking. Even with as much mW as its pumping out, it only has the same brightness as a 5mW green pointer, to an extent. In a room, on the walls next to a 5mW green it basically has the same intensity, meaning it brightens up the walls just about as much as the 5mW green. But when using it outside, and shining on far off objects..its considerably brighter than a 5mW green. And you know your messing with a beast.
The beam really can only be visible in the darkness of night, with a considerable amount of moisture in the air. But it is visible. And depending on the elements it may be considerably noticeable. So for a red beam..its pretty nice. In a fogged room, or outside its beam is a very solid red line.
This Pulsar doesn't seem to have any prep time before it hits its peak. Once you turn it on, its instantly as bright as it will get. Which is nice, because its no fun to watch a laser slowly turn on. This baby is rearing to go right away.
Laserchecking and duty-cycle - I was quite impressed with the results I got here. First, the Pulsar has 3 different models. a P75, P100, and a P125. All the numbers correspond to how much mW's that specific model is pumping out.
With this P125 model, I was getting a peak of about 145. Here is a little chart I devised that clearly states its duty cycle and power loss rates over set amounts of time.
With fresh NiMh batteries I got a peak of 145. And it went down to about 135 after a few mins. And here is my readings I got after I left the laser on for exactly one hour..Yes, one hour with no stopping. No duty cycle from what I can tell.
113mW at 6mins
105mW - 10mins
97.7mW - 15mins
92.1mW - 20mins
87.4mW - 25mins
83.7mW - 30mins
82.9mW - 35mins
81.1mW - 40mins
79.6mW - 45mins
77.8mW - 50mins
76mW - 55mins
74.5mW - 1 hour.
So at one hour it seemed to start leveling off, with less loss in mW per minuet. So eventually it would have sustained..but I think this could have a lot to do with the batteries, and maybe the only reason the mW's were dropping.
Heat build up - As far as I could tell there was absolutely no heat up whatsoever in the barrel after one hour of running it. I was quite impressed...I could have run it until the batteries died no problem. So the duty cycle for this Pulsar is non-existent. And a really great feature to have, especially when doing mirror tricks, or just having fun with it in a scanner where leaving it on for long periods is a must.
Beam diameter - When I fog my room, or shine it outside int he dark its pretty apperent that this this has a nice wide beam coming out of the aperture. Its probably easily 4mm as the site claims..and though I didn't do a divergence test its beam seems to be very good and goes for a much larger distance before coming big than the greens.
Overall - I am quite satisfied with this laser. It has performed really well, and so far not a single large problem. Mostly everything I have mentioned as a con is really not that big of a deal.
If you are looking for a nice high powered red, that performs well under stress, the new Pulsar is the way to go. Its got a sleek casing, unlimited duty cycle and is just fun to play with.
Besides its lack of brightness power compared to the greens, its a work horse. And will give you want you want as far as a red laser goes. power, divergence, and when you need it, you can focus with a lens to probably get some serious power.
