I had an extra 40mw 635nm diode and was looking for a host. I was considering another LM337 build in a pen host like my 46mw 635. But I wanted to do something new. So I bought a super red beast 006 and took it apart. Just a quick note the drive was outputting ~400ma to the IR diode.

Materials needed
1 x CR123A battery
1 x Green Driver 100ma
1 x Green Beast 006 host
1 x Aixiz Case
1 x Acrylic lens
4 x Inches copper tape

Here are some pictures

Re: Super Red Beast 006

Cool.
Looks oddly familiar to me. Different host, but I'll be damned if that's not the same driver.:D:D

I wish we could get more of these diodes.
I tried measuring divergence of mine today, and came up with roughly 0.5mrad!
Maybe I should measure it again from more than 12m away....

Did you notice too that these diodes hardly need any heatsinking, it doesn't seem to warm up at all?

Re: Super Red Beast 006

Are you sure copper tape is good for heatsinking? I would have thought it wouldn't be, but i'm probably wrong...

Re: Super Red Beast 006

Hmm. Shouldn't the diode be insulated from the Host since you are using the Green driver witch is case positive and the 635nm diode is case negative.?

This will cause it to shot.

Yea divergence is great at long distance it seems better than my other green beast 006. As for heat these things make nothing for heat.

The copper tape should be fine it is actual copper and transfers heat as such. I use is for PCB trace repair and modification. I also soldered it on the bottom to make sure all the electrical contact would be good. This diode is also running such low power it does not heat much anyway.

No this 635nm diode is case positive, that is the reason I went with a green driver and a LM337 driver on my last build.

Re: Super Red Beast 006

OH I see.:) Thanks.

+ For the build Looks Great.;)

Thanks man I was looking for a way to put one of these rare diodes to use but in a not hacked together way and I am pleased.

According to the old heatsink visible at the first picture you are not using a 40mW 635 diode but a 40mW 685 diode. Anyway, nice project. I'm looking at budget hosts too.

I still don't think copper tape is good heatsinking, because of the air between the layers.

The old heatsink is wrong I would not listen to it. It is a 635nm 40mw diode yes one of the rare diodes, the 685 is in another host but thanks for playing.

I would agree if the adheasive on the back side was not a thermal and electrical conductor as well as serving to remove air when properly applied.

Also, it looks like the laser sticker is on the wrong side, pointing at the key (?) instead of the aperture.
