no, it sure wouldn't , I was just saying its a lot less trouble to get another diode instead of building a custom module. I did it for my to-3 because its a 2watt diode, and it was worth the extra work.

Well, im not expecting anywhere near 2watts of red, but the IR 780nm in the LG drive got me to thinking.
In the configuration that they have used in the Sony, one would think that they have to be a bit more tough.
It doesnt look as if the heatsinking is there, like you see in the long open cans.
So I figured, have they over compinstaed for this?  
The material they are built on looks like the same brittel alloy used in the LG.
If that diode showed promising characteristics in the LG's IR, why not the red in the Sony?

And if the the whole 'chip' diode thing becomes a trend, we have to figure out a way to mount them.
No better of a time than now to get a head start

I have an ir diode from some drive, I don't remember what it came out of, but it does much more than Ive heard people say it should, its doing 200mw's. so yes, these might be worth playing with, you might be able to come up with an adapter that mounts it in a 5.6mm mount easily. I say go for it, see what you can make them do if you have them to play with, but if you are planning on building one, don't get this drive unless you want to play with a flat mount diode. If it did 350 - 400mw's, it would be well worth messing with. these may actually be easier to mount on a flat heat sink.try using some arctic silver epoxy to mount one, maybe it will do way better than we think, its always worth a try. Just make sure you take a lot of video when you make it work good.
I don't think these can do that though.

oh, also, I will add that if you get 400mw's from one of these, id tear out these 3 drives in a second, and tear out the diodes and build a laser with them. ;D cause they suck for burning discs.

If they suck for writting,why not give them a proper burrial? Extraction first of course

they do still read well, never know when someone needs a dvd drive in their computer.

Completely unusable?

A good long open can diode can be found in the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7190A 20x burner. I have harvested 3 of these so far, the last one I pushed to 500ma @ 7.4 volts! It only lasted a few weeks, but it put my Dilda to shame.
