The price will take a while to drop... and when i say a while, i don't mean 2 years...

So, how long did it take for open can diodes to become such a reasonable price?[/quote]
If you buy them from a company like Sony, they are around $200. The reason DVD drives are cheap is because the manufacturers buy the diodes in bulk, so it is cheaper. You would get a better deal if you bought a 1000, rather than 1.

OK. Makes sense, Senkat buys a thousand diodes at a time! so If Senkat bought one thousand SLD1332V diodes they would be from (I don't know) $50-$150?

And if we make a group buys? If we find a thousand of people that want this diode... The price will be go down. :)

Asked them for a price of 500-1000

Edit: Got a message:

Hello Arkadiy,

Here's the pricing you requested.
Sony, SLD1332V
250-499pcs $380.37/ea
500-999pcs $368.48/ea
1kpcs $357.35/ea

What is your application? Is this a new or existing project? Please let me know if you have other questions!

Damn!!! It's too expensive also in a group buys. Then we have to wait that this diode will be used in a DVD burner or some project to get it by a lower price. :(

I will be waiting for those 50x DVD writers :p

This diode will NEVER get used in a DVD-rw. It's already been mentioned and nobody even noticed it. These diodes are MULTIMODE. Therefore not suitable for diy laser pointers unless you really like a laser with horrible beam profile, and certainly not suitable for DVD burning purposes.

Where did you see that they are multimode? I guess i didn't read carefully enough...

It's a laser diode with multipal longitudinal modes. That means that the emission spectrum consists of 2 or more spectral lines occuring at the nominal wavelength at the device.
I can't explain it any better than that...

OK, so it is like a multiple line argon, but red and is in a diode. right? But what is so wrong about it? Can't you just put a Convex lens (like the 6mm diameter 4000mm focal length double convex lens from optotronics) So It will almost be collimated?

The best I understand it and I could be wrong.(you can bet your ass people will correct me if I am) is it's essentially like putting two or more diodes side by side and shooting them the same direction. so your beam profile is not going to be one beam it's going to be more than one. This sucks for a pointer but is ok for a lot of the honest uses for lasers.

You pretty much narrowed it down, Kenom. They also have to be the same wavelength, but then again... that is pretty obvious :p

Nobody cares about its awesome skills, just because of the <$400 price? D:
