Well,i thought about making a Red Burning laser for a school project,(when i first suggested i MIGHT make one they all laughed so i thought what the heck,i always wanted to make one :p)
So i figured i would have to
1.Buy a dvd laser from senkat,
2.get an Aixiz module,(im not allowed to post links, found one on ebay: 650nm 10mW laser OEM diode 3-5 VDC with lens 650 nm
for 12$+4$shipping )
3.get a driver,
4.get batteries+several small parts
5.while i wait that they arrive read the tuts on this site...
The only problem would be that there is no radioshack where i live...so all the small parts could quickly become a problem...
btw do 200mw ir filters exist/are they universal?
I would appreciate any advice  :)

Re: Schoold Project/DIY Red Laser

I don't think IR is a problem with red diodes as it is actually emitted at 630~650nm. (As opposed to green in which IR is converted to green)

IR is NOT emitted by red diodes - and everything you need to build a red laser can be purchased online (From me, or other places) I actually have TWO store links - check the group buys section for details - but radio shack online, and ebay all have the parts needed.

Welcome to the forum to BOTH of you !!

Thanks guys, didn't know the part about no ir from red:p
the problem about both radioshack online&ebay would be that if the deal is not really good it would be a waste of money on transport /shipping cost, how would i go on about controlling how many mw would be emitted?(like,if i buy a laser from you i don't want it to emit @300 or so,since it would insta-kill it),(although ive heard some diodes can go to 800mw WITH Active cooling that is)i would also like to know what would be fair pricing on the aixiz and evt. other things?
-[Thank you for the warm welcome]- :D

I'm actually doing the same thing at the minute;
Aixiz 5mw unit ~ £5 delivered from america
18x DVD-RW from computer fair ~ £20 else £30 from PC-World
In retrospect I'd have bought a diode from this site though :) much cheaper.
You need to build a driver, most of the components can be salvaged from old things  but I still can't find a LM317.
sales.stonetek.org/diy.html
^They have the entire kit there for $15 delivered so you should get that, it would make a good project too as you can say you actually built the driver.

have found the DIY kit :p thanks for the link anyway, and yep, probably going to do a lot of things when im finished with the basic...like,adding a charger for the batteries and stuff..but thats to come, will post pics etc once its finished(in ~1-2months)
im going to buy the laser from stonetek/senkat,since i've found that to be safest AND cheapest,as for the driver, sure was going to assemble it anyways :p prob going for an aixiz 10mw 12u$d,btw us dollars are cheaper than pounds ^^(So it might be cheaper for you too to buy them straight from senkat, and being sure that they can be used)
SenKat :how do i regulate the output of the laser,to say like 190mw?

thanks rog8811 for the link :p
btrw the driver in it would not support a senkat diode would it? :-/
(Oh and the delivery time from dx is about 2 weeks to where i live...)

The driver is only designed for a 5mw so afraid it is no good for a SenKat red

Thought so :D
will the driver have to be a precise mw amount? :-/
like (200mw laser=200/210mw driver?)

looks nice,thank you :p
another quick question:how will i know the current mw (so that i don't end up burning out the laser)

Hey, sorry to intrude, but i am making a laser also. I got the diode out of the axiz housing and there is a little circuit on the back of the stock diode. Do I need to solder my dvd diode to this circuit or will it work if I just soldier the positive and negative wires directly to the back of the diode? Is the circuit really necessary? thanks

As greg said, EVERYTHING to make your own DIY red can be bought off SenKat's site, he sells the diodes, aixiz modules, driver circuits, dorcy hosts etc. the only thing you need to make a DIY red outta that is patience and carefullness :D

Kinda off topic, but bomber you dont use the circuit that comes with the module it wont run the dvd diode, it doesnt give enuf current.

....lazer.... ;D ;D ;D

On Topic again:how would i know the mw that the driver is giving out?
Like,to prevent it from burning out my laser?
