Default Save mA?

Hi all,
Im building a laser, and i need some help chosing the right mA.
I have a closed can diode extracted from 16x dvd burner.
With a LM317 driver, to stabillize the current

On the internet i found a video, where they used a opencandiode,
They set their mA at 430.
But how much mA can a closedcandiode handel?
Im trying to make a burning red laser that wont die after 2times being turned on.

Can you take Picture of the Close Can Diode you have.?

Most Closed Can Red Diodes i have seen are Long Closed Can.

I know there is Another Short Closed Can One But I cant Remember the Name. I have never seen it in a sled before its a Brand New diode with No Solder mask on it.

You sure you have a Red and Not a IR diode.?

Sounds like an IR to me.

Do you also have a Link to the Burner you have.?

It is a diode extractedfrom an old samsung ts-h552

Why would you think its IR? I tested them at 50mA to see wich one is IRand wich was the red one. (I extracted 2 diodes)

So i know wich one is the red one, but im just wondering:
What mA is safe for a red closed can diode, but gives it enough power to burn well?

If needed i will upload photos later.

I reckon 300ma will give you a good lifetime

EDIT: May be capable of 350 but that will reduce its life.

I run my 16X around 200ma for 109mw I find it safe

Then again I used this diode RLD65PZB5 out of a 16x

Datasheet is 200ma max. I know you can push them but w/e.

EDIT:
I gonna edit my LM317 Driver: I will add a diode so polarity change wont kill the diode.
As ressistor, i gonna use 2 10ohms in parrallel so i get 5ohms. when using this resistors i get 1,25/5 x 1000 = 250mA.
If i add a 100ohms pot , so i can set it to 200mA but if i want some more burning i gonna set it to 250mA

I've just put together a mini pocket together using a SOC and running it at 250 mA,seems to work fine (For Now) you should be able to run it at 250mA safely
