i really need to know if thers any forum members here who own this unit?
for $410 i dont think its too bad, but something tells me ther may b a catch behind this.
ie - theres only WL and LG that have sold high powered red portables for some time now.
LG's orion is 200-250mw and costs $589 - S-KY claim this is 300mw and the price is like almost $200 cheaper.
does any1 know what kinda diode is used in the orion compared to this S-KY unit?
my main use for this laser will be for pointing distances at night.
WL Pulsar125 sucks, u can hardly see the beam at night unless its really foggy.
any feedback - much appreciated :)

well their dpss lasers seem good and its cheaper because THEY are the factory owners not resellers we just get build price + profit not build + profit +profit

Make one out of a DVD burner and save several hundred $$$. ;)

If you want pointing at distances why not get a greenie? :p You can get a killer one for 400 bucks, and way more visible than any 650nm you can find.

I've heard a lot of bad review about their lasers except for the GB ones. I personally haven't had the best time with them either. In any case though, the Orion uses a multi-mode c mount 660nm diode and I'm guessing those S-KY units do too (unless they're overdriven/underpower)

if i were to be honest, im not too sure about the dis/advantages of a muli-mode diode.
whats its main purpose and how does it differ to a pulsars diode?

A multimode diode is (I think) just like having many diodes really close to eachother so you get more power but as you may figure out by yourself , the beam quality would suffer.DVD diodes and diodes used in pulsars are most likely singlemode.

The purpose is more power! Single mode diodes only get to a couple hundred mW at best. The problem with multi-mode diodes is their multiple longitudinal modes/wavelengths. A single mode diode has a pretty solid and narrow peak at its center wavelength. A multi-mode diode has other peaks around its center wavelength. This means less coherent, and thus worse beam specs.

Unfortunately though, that's just the nature of more power, and why you don't see single mode red portables over ~200mW. If you need decent beam specs and more power, you cant just use a direct injected diode. Other options like 671nm DPSS offer great beam specs, but with much larger $/mW and power/heat dissipation needs.

300mW won't be much of an improvement with respect to beam visability. Maybe 60% brighter? If it's just for pointing, Why not go green?

300mw of red is good for burning, not for beaming. Green for pointing all the way. This is 200mw of green which will be over 100% more visible that the red for about $120!!! http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1997

I think it is the C mount multimode inside. Look at specs:
Divergence <3mRad,
Transverse mode: Near TEoo

I just don't knowwhy they do it when there are perfectly good single mode reds outhere for much less. Who needs crappy multimode beam specially if its only 50-100mW more only.

ok thanks alot for the feedback guys.
i know 532 is so much better for pointing but i already have many green pointers, needed a high powered red to go with it.
on a clear night the pulsar isnt powerful enough in terms of beam brightness, with bits of mist/fog 650nm looks awesome.
im really unsure about what im going to buy next. i cant afford the special edition orion 635 out of my $ range at the moment.
wish it were possible to get single mode reds putting out over 300mw in a portable!
