RLF18130 model... What lens for thinner beam?

My first post on this website. It looks to have a lot of people who are veterans at making lasers and laser systems.

I need help with laser model RLF18130. The beam is way to wide. Is there a lens to make it thinner and more concentrated?

Some more info would be nice. A model number doesn't really mean too much if we don't know who makes it, beam color, laser style(portable,labby) it will be a lot easier to help you if we knew more.

Sorry about that. I thought the part number would help but heres what I'm talking about. And its from a website that this forum supports too :)...

I found the green version of that one too and its the same 6 volts... but I'm afraid that the beam won't be as collimated just as this one isn't. 6 volts means brighter right?

thats the dilda laser as most of us have been calling it.. :) most focusable lasers will have a wider beam unless you have the right type of lens. if you find a green with a fat beam your stuck with it unless you want to go through an expensive process of finding the right lenses to collimate the beam to a smaller diam.. best thing to do is find a focusable one(if possible). 6v doesnt always mean brighter, its the current to the diode/pump diode that matters.

If you want to get a tighter beam you will need to use a lens with a higher focal point, this will also mean that the lens will have to sit closer to the laser diode to achieve proper focus (beam)

Ahh the dilda laser. I ordered the other one (New style). Still waiting for it to arrive.

How do you like it? Burns well??

I believe the greens have a thinner beam diameter but im not sure.

Hi Tabish... it burns very well when its focused right. The closer the better. I'm not to "crazy" about the thick beam though.

ndrew2505... So as long as the amperage the driver allows is high, then the extra voltage will make it brighter.

Gryphon and ndrew2505... Where can I get the lens for it?


I'm sort of new to this at the moment and the friend that I used to consult with is in jail currently. Which sucks but ... once I learn the basics about something I'm set. Thanks for the help, it means alot

then you can use a brass Aixiz glass lens assembly, with the proper AR coating for about $10 ppd.

It will give a good beam with ~10% power increase.

Now when you say "good beam", do you mean a thinner one? Well I guess as long as the thicker beam is bright enough then I'd be ok with it.

Thanks for letting me know about your lenses I didn't see those before. The extra money would be worth it since it works for all of the modules I plan to buy at hightechdealz.

I see you are a bit confused.

Different diodes need different currents and voltages, it's really useless to compare powers between lasers by looking at the voltage they take from the batteries. As an example, you have the 5mW red keychains that use to work on 4.5V and some 400mW or more green lasers that take 3.6V!

Remember that between the batteries and the diode there's the driver, which can boost or reduce the voltage/current the way you want. It's a bit more complex than what you are thinking, lasers are different than light bulbs/Leds ;)

The only way to know the difference in brightness is to look at the power, and this only works with lasers of the same color, and you must know it's not a linear relation. Needless to say, this does'nt apply when comparing different colors, since the human eye see some colors better than others. This way a 30mW green laser it's way brighter than a 200mW.

So, for example, a 30mW green pen from dealextreme that works on 3V is brighter than the 200mW red laser you are looking at that works on 7.2-8V :)

Also, if you wanna hear my opinion, if you are looking for a good beam, forget about anything else than a green laser. a 50mW green pen from Dealextreme.com. Will have a brighter and smaller beam than any red laser you will ever see, for 20$!
