Up for review today is something I ordered off Bloompyle a long time ago, and for some reason or another I never managed to get it reviewed. Christmas break is here, so I have absolutely no excuses ;)

This is in a chrome leadlight host, and it uses 2x 10440 batteries (AAA sized lithium ion)

This was bought back in the time he was enjoying making builds, though his recent obsession on gas lasers has taken away that opportunity.

This outputs roughly 300mW, though in a host this small the heat builds up insanely fast and you can't really run it longer than 30 seconds comfortably.

As you can see, the diode still has the accursed wings :(

Does it have the 650nm diode Jordan sells? I had one of those and it was a perfect dot :thinking:

I love the look of the chrome leadlights

Honestly, I forget exactly which diode this uses.

It's an open can diode, and it can push 300mW without much heatsinking. Lemme ask him and one of us will get back to you on that.
 
If it's like the diode in mine, the wings are only that noticable with a g lens. when using a 3 element, the wings can't be seen when focused to a big dot, which appears perfectly circular with excellent light density distribution. when focused to infinity with the 3 element, you really have to look close to notice the wings which hardly stand out against the dot's natural flare. A g lens would make a more visible beam as it'd be thinner, a bit more power too, though on mine I like the 3 element.

Oops, you answered that as I typed, probably the same diode then.

In my collection, only one laser beats the divergence of these, and it's not the RPL, it's a truly outstanding performer for the price, an all-around great laser

looks like you have the g lens? try a 3 element if you have one, see the difference in the wings

TBH, I don't think I have a 3 element lens.

Er wait... maybe my unbuilt kryton bag has a 3 element...

Aha! It is one, yeah the wings go away. Looks like I'm swapping lenses with this. Thank you!

It's the 3.8mm diodes. If you don't have wings, you're lucky.

Back when these came out, there was a lot of depressing reports of those wings. Also, this is using a g lens :)

This was a nice pen to build. I like pen hosts, sleek and professional looking.

Maybe one day I'll do personal builds again. Who knows :) Though my CuBr build might take precedence :p

You know I personally don't mind the "wings" on these red diodes.
The 3-element lenses make the wings smaller but you sacrifice a lot of power and get extra splash that is less visible until you turn off the lights.
Plus the beam diameter at the aperture with the 3 element lenses is huge which makes the power density really low close up. They also make the profile a hard circle. With the G lens, the profile is much more natural and gaussian.
To add on to that, the 3-elements stick out of the module a lot and it looks horrible and wobble around.
IMO there is really no positive thing about those junky cheap lenses except that they are cheap.

650-G-1 all the way... especially in a pen, you want to maximize the efficiency of the system to get the most power out with the minimum amount of heat produced.

Ouch, did a LPM run. Also ran it with the lights off. Not nearly as clean, and the power did drop a little more than I expected... This is a tough call...
 
Nice one, ZRaffleticket! As an owner of the two chrome pen builds from styropyro I can only approve this type of a luxurious looking and decent power packing laser:). Yours from bloompyle is bloody powerful, would add it to the other 2 I have if I got a chance.

How much power loss? I' don't have an LPM, I wonder what mine's doing with each one on. normally I'd agree with RA Pierce about the lenses, but of my units which can use either, this is the only one with the 3 element, i just love that nearly perfect dot, though I agree the beam diameter at aperture makes for a wide and therefore less visible beam. still, over a distance, the divergence will easily make up for that. especially compared to a mitsu 638. not sure about the splash he's talking about, mine's fine with either, maybe his 3 element is dirty

at the end of the day, it's always nice to have both lens types:wave:

IDK, maybe your 3 element is supposed to be for 405-520. I know there are two types DTR sells, some for 405-530, others for reds. I assume they really are different and the distinction isn't arbitrary

Yeah that's a pen on steroids , nice build bloomie and nice grab ZR.

All my reds apart from the 638 build have the wings, and they don't bother me one bit.
 
Question about these diodes. they are the 300mW ones DTR sells? his site says they're 650nm, but pretty much everywhere else I see 660nm. so which is it, or are they different diodes?

Depends on operating current and temperature.

The ones you see pushed doing ~300mW are on the higher end of the wavelength spectrum @660-665nm.
