Many new multimeters have a diode test mode. I use this current limited feature when polarity is unknown.

okay... but whats the writing/symbol on the mulit meter that indicates the diode polarity mode caues i have a very expensive new multimeter and make heads or tails of the writing

I would recommend reading Sam's Laser FAQ and your multimeter manual. You will probably learn the answers to many future questions as well.
