I just finished my first semi-respectable looking laser using a plastic housing from a phoneline-to-audio-jacks adapter I used making a landline phone into a skype phone (which incidentally is for sale). Everything fit swimmingly, with not too many modifications and no gluing things.

I wish I could have found a smaller pushbutton, or I found a way to mount this one further inside.. but whatever...

It's a short open can I harvested from an Aopen 18x burner, driven by a rckstr driver at 350mA... I expect it's putting out about 200mW.

Here's the guts...

You'll notice I soldered 2 pennies to the head of the aixis module for heatsinking... well boy does this thing need it, I hadn't counted on it heating up so quickly.

Here it is looking menacing, ready to pounce on the nearest black object...

Here's a quick video of it burning through a CD case in less than a second...

That's a pretty cool build you got there.Powerful too.You could use more pennies to put the around the aixiz after you drilled a hole through them. That would look cool and should provide good heatsinking.

What battery are you using? :-/

Another simple build burner.

You know, I'd like to see almost a competition here :) Probably impossible over the internet, but it would be cool to plonk a DVD burner in front of someone and see how long before it's a burning laser ;D

That kind of competition would be amazing... Especially if you get to keep the result. I vote it be held in Texas.

Thanks guys! I'm pretty happy with it... I've shortened the pushbutton so the black part is within the housing... now it only sticks out as far as the aixiz does.. it looks a lot nicer now.

Yep, canadian pennies which have been tinned.

Thanks, I didn't make it though. :-/

If I had a drill bit the size of an aixiz, that's just what I'd do... for now though this seems to do the trick... Just can't leave it on for more than a min or two.

The battery is a 7.4v Lithium Polymer battery from DX, the Mystery brand one for like 8 bucks. I plan on getting a 7 color LED battery monitor for it and mounting it in that conspicuous looking hole I drilled in it. Watch out if you use one of these batteries, they're unprotected, and LiPo's don't like being drained below 3v per cell... so after I've been using it for a few hours I like to plug my dmm in and check that it's over 6v still. they also have an exponential dropoff curve, so once it's at 6.5v you have very little time to charge it.

nice first build btw. keep up the good job

No, I wish... I'm going to buy one from some RC helicopter site... they're a lot more expensive than I thought though :-/ like $40 shipped... probably worth it in the end though. Beats exploding all the time.

I'll probably get the one jayrob used in his "icebox" build... either that or if I'm feeling adventurous I found a DIY one using a PIC microcontroller. Here's the link to that... http://www.users.bigpond.com/webspace/plms_spad&mugi/LVA project.html

May I ask why you just didn't get protected cells instead of unprotected? Or is the "exploding all the time" the diode not the cells?

As far as I can tell you cannot buy protected LiPo batteries... I've yet to see them for sale anywhere. You can buy cutoff circuits and other "protectors" but they're around $20. (and yes, by "exploding all the time" I was referring to the batteries, which do a neat thing called "venting with flames" if they're mishandled.)

I'm going to be buying an eeprom writer soon though, so I'll probably be fooling around with PIC microcontrollers and it looks like I can make a battery status monitor using colored LED's to indicate charge, for under $10... maybe free, depending on what I can scavenge and what I can get free samples of.
