Those modules modules have been tested by many members and the most that you will get out of those modules is 30mw I have a couple of them my self and use them when i get bored. They are fun to play with but will not burn

Ahh, I see. Make sure to get a driver that is compatible with your diode. If it's not it might blow, or simply not work. As for modules, you can get empty ones from survivallaser or DTR...

You might also be able to find them on eBay for less.

I saw a DIY driver for a DVD burner diode on instructables.com which said you'll need these parts to build it. what we are going to need is
1 laser diode (you could hack it out of a dvd drive) x1
2 10uf 16v capacitor or 10uf 63v capacitor x1
3 1n4007 diode x1
4 10 ohm resistors x2
5 100 ohm variable resistor x1
6 lm 317 voltage regulator x1
7 veroboard x1
8 soildering iron
9 solder
10 heat sink
11 switch
all done!!! What do u guys think about this?

That works. We have all used them.

LM317 Voltage Regulator (rs-components)
1N4001 Diode (Reverse Voltage Protection)
10µF Capacitor
Resistors (Value depending on diode current)
Potentiometer (only necessary if you want to change the diode current)
Switch
Fuse
All parts together cost me around 2€. (~2.5$)

Calculate Resistors

The Resistor is to be calculated as follows:

Resistance = 1.25V / max. Current to Diode

The 1.25V is the Reference Voltage of the LM317.

Example:

maximum diode current is 250mA:

1.25V/0.25A = 5Ohm

The Variable Resistor can be used to control the current to the diode.

The Current can be calculated with this formula:

I = 1.25V / Resistor + Variable Resistor

This is what a different site said for a home made driver

LAZERZ, you have just quadruple posted, please use the edit button on the first of your last four posts to combine them.
Many members frown on multiple posts, and will neg. rep you!

Let's give him at least another day.

LoveDemBurningLAZERZ, Look up some more information WITH your dad. (i.e. How do lasers work, Laser safety checklist etc.)
Chances are he will understand a bit more than you, and may catch something you didn't. It's good that you're asking and not
just doing, but all of the questions you have asked have already been answered online. I'm not trying to discourage you from
asking questions, but look it up first. That way, you'll have your answer faster, and you won't have a bunch of angry vets getting
on you about searching first :D.

At least a few more days I think. This one sounds quite young and may be trainable.

A few lessons for L'D'B'LAZERS:

1. Safety glasses are not optional. Buy them BEFORE you build a burning laser.
2. The diodes in DVD burners are not toys. A single moment of oops can result in your eyesight being jacked up for life, and it sounds like for you this could be a long long time.
3. 'Laser safety' is not about protecting your diodes, it's about protecting yourself.

We want you to have fun and enjoy this hobby but do it right. Do it safely. Get safety glasses. Read through the "Safety and Legal issues" forum. start here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f53/hit-eye-1000mw-445nm-blue-laser-69469.html

Sounds quite young ō_ō. Ummm ok. Sounds trainable? Makes me sound stupid. No offense to u. Also bowtieguy I'll post less. :) I'll probably make the driver first sense I know how to solder decently :) also did the stuff posted above work that I posted?

Take it as a compliment. You can't train the stupid, but ignorance is curable with education. Seriously though, from the content and the tone of some of your earlier posts it doesn't sound like you realize just how incredibly easy it is to do very serious and permanent damage to your eyes with a DVD burner diode. Faster than your blink reflex can close your eye, faster than you can turn off the power, faster than you can look away. There are plenty of veterans here that will happily assist with your 'education' and just about all of them will start with safety. Listen to them, and get some good safety glasses BEFORE you play with any laser capable of putting out more than 10-20 mW of power. And if you build a laser with your dad, you should both have safety glasses.

LDBL, You're fine, no need to post less, just edit your existing post to add the new info., as long as there have been no subsequent posts made by other members. :)
