Polarity of Senkats diodes

Ugh, Im still confused.


I bought your diode, BTW.

Anyway, what if im holding it...like...flipped over, how do I know which I can cut off?

Senkat, can you please take a good photo of it, and show me how to find the one to cut off.

(or, mabye you can cut the one i dont need off for me, then ship it to me)

I did, I checked em out, but couldnt it be facing two ways, so you might snap off the one you dont use, or the positive.

Could you please snap half of the one I dont need off of mine please?

Kaspar - I am gonna be mean as hell here - I have FAITH in you ! YOU CAN DO IT ! Honest - if you have the grounded pin facing up, like it is the 12 on a clock....now, remember - the pins are facing you at this point....the only pin at teh 12 o'clock spot is the one that is joined to the case....make sure that one is the one facing the 12 o'clock spot...I mean it, you CAN do this ! The other two pins have a dark circle around the base of the pins...the grounded one is one solid pin, and looks like it is part of the case....do NOT be nervous - once you have one, it wil be VERY easy for you to see what I am talking about ! Print this out if you want to ! now, with the grounded pin facing the 12 - the on on the right, at about the 5 o'clock position is the one you want to cut half way. That is all there is to it ! The one to the left, at the 7 o'clock position is the positive connectio!

Now - IF you do not understand this once you receive the diode - PM, or email me.....I iwll help you out I also HOPEFULLY will do some filming tomorrow, and will demonstrate this....

it isn't that hard, you have tons of pix. Be brave. Look at the above pic, it's one of the best.

Agreed, the above pic is perfect, and if one can not follow that, then one should not be getting involved with the diodes. But he is going to plug it directly into a minimag so...........

WHAT ??? Oh, no way man.....If that is true, then I will refund his funds rather than ship a diode to it's death !

I hope he at least uses a resistor and capacitor, but I don't think he will. Maybe he just isn't ready yet for the hobby.

when messing with some IR diodes. I accidentally snapped the pos off. :'(


Now I use 30 guage solid wire, way safer for the diode than 20 guage solid wire.

You have the pic of the actual diode, and we tell you exactly which one to cut, I honestly think you cannot make a pointer out of this diode if you can't cut the leg.

Note that there is no photodiode in these. The leg is not connected on the inside so grounding to the case should not present a problem. See the thread below for pics and some info on fixing a brolen anode leg.

Ok, I'm going to throw in my .02¢ here.  I've always wondered how to easily find out what pins are what on a laser diode.  Now, the norm is to have the negative being the one with no black ring around the base of the pin.  Once you locate that pin the positive is counterclock wise and does have a black ring around the pin.  I'll post a picture of my diode and you can see black rings around two of the pins.

Now the method I like to use first to find out the pin locations is to first test the diode with a multimeter.
move the multimeter to this setting

then making sure that the polarity is correct on the multimeter (positive wire(red) is connected to positive and negative wire (black) is connected to com)  Test the diode to all pins until you locate the one's that show a result.  Noting while you do so where the black wire is and where the red wire is.  Once you get a positive test you now know that where you had the black wire is negative and where you had the red wire is positive.




so in this picture the pin at the top is negative (with no black ring around it) and the positive is directly COUNTERCLOCKWISE (with black ring around the base). the pin clockwise is the photodiode (also black ring around base)
