This host was originally going to be another BDR 209 build but he didn't make it.
So I decided to use an Opnext diode I had sitting around for a while.

I had a old linear driver that was set to 950ma from a previous build and I had a new linear driver set to 150ma,
using one of the resistors from the old driver I managed to get 190ma with the new one nice.

Initially I was intending to drive this diode around 300ma.

200ma is the recommended current so I'm happy with 190ma for now since it's a 638.

Both of the heatsinks were from those cheap 303 green lasers, the key lock is the diode heatsink and the battery contact from the head of the 303, a bit of work on the drill press again and i now have 2 pieces with thread to screw straight into the head!

The host is a stainless-steal Cree XM-L2 with the name SECURITYING G7-L2,
it was purchased on eBay a while back for about $35 it's very tough and heavy for its size and an awsome switch.

I'm using a two element AR coated red glass lens for now, bothe the acrylic and AR coated glass seem to produce a very nice dot with this diode,

I'm very happy how the build turned out and now I need to get me another for my single mode mini stainless steal pen collection.

Hi BBB,
Great build 638's are nice i like them despite the dot quality. You do a nice job and your soldering skills are clean i like that. heat shrinking the driver for a no short resolution cool..
At that Amperage you don't need to heat sink that driver. Great pics of the build also buddy keep up the good work .. Rep + in order here sorry gotta spread some around

Rich:)

These are single modes so the dot isn't like the Oclaro or Mits class 4.
Nice build. Can't REP you yet though.
If you get a moment take a look at the 650nm thread in this same section as I show a laserbtb at 1.1W and a pretty nice dot. Much nicer than the high powered 638nm dots.

Nice build. I am going to make one myself can you tell me if it is hard to put everything together?

Good job man. Always love the stainless steel host. What driver are you using?

Out of curiosity badboybilly why don't you post the pics 800x600 instead? Can't see a lot of detail in your pics.

Maybe it's just me but when I click on a pic it just gets a little bigger and will barely enlarge before going away on my Galaxy Note 4 and the resolution is not good.
I just tried it on my main computer and your pics look good there when I click on them. Wonder if it's a universal issue with Droid phones or its like that with apple too. I'll check with my wife's iphone.
Ok, messing around some more some pics come up different sizes and the resolution isn't as high sometimes. Trying with my wife's iphone s5 she has the same thing happen that happens on my phone where if you touch the pic and try to make it bigger it goes away. Does that happen on yours?
I use imageshack and you just select the size you want and when you add pics to it it automatically resizes to 800x600 which is the sites recommended max. Please don't think I'm "on" you or anything. I usually am looking on my phone though and because it has a large screen I don't like using the mobile versions of sites. Does what you use allow you to post the pics as 800x600 without having to click on them so they are big to begin with?

So mine are thumbnails to you? lol
You do some nice work so let's see it in all its glory;)

I also noticed Alien does his pics the same way and the same thing happens. I guess im wondering why do it that way instead of just posting the pics without having to click on them. Are there really that many members who have super slow Internet still? I know Hak still has dialup and I'm sorry if I'm sounding insensitive.
I just noticed cake does thumbnails also. Seems like all of a sudden a lot of members are doing it now so that's what's gotten my attention.
Trend too.

Just posted the question in the general section;)

Nice build, looks like a pretty practical pointer to me with a nice color and decent beam specs as well.

Hi BBB,

Rich:)

No need for a heat sink, but this is a heat sHRink. It actually makes thermal performance worse and the solder would hold the resistors in place perfectly fine. One big advantage is that components cannot touch the metal case if they rattle around in there, and heatshrink usually holds up a lot better compared to electrical tape in the long run in things that get moved around a lot.
