Oclaro/USHIO HL63603TG 120mW 638nm Laser Diode

Datasheet

I have received several requests to murder one of the new Opnext 638nm diodes so here is some data I put together tonight. If someone wants to make a graph that would be great. Looks like we have another tough as nails diode here that just won't die. Pumped 1.3A in this tiny 3.8mm diode and it stopped lasing but as usual of late with these newer diodes it did not kill it. Just turned it down and it kept on kicking.🍺

Awesome, thanks DTR! I have yet to build with the one i recently got from you, waiting to see what i could get out of it.

I think I have my next build.. :thanks:

I've got one set to 200mA with a 3 element outputting 109mW peak. Played it safe and used the datasheet, hoping to keep the wavelength down by driving it minimally.

Hey bloompyle wouldn't an acrylic have better beam specs and output at that current setting?

@wannaburnstuff
I would say in a handheld 300mA would not be a problem but I would like to see what the wavelength is doing.
Yes an acrylic would give more power and almost no splash compared to the three element glass.:)

The standard acrylic aixiz lens? Wow, I never really touch those anymore. I've gotten so used to glass with these higher powered lasers. I can try one tomorrow.

Have to say, it's a great diode. She does get hot though....Also, noticed a LOT of splash in the form of circles around the diode. Though I suppose the acrylic will fix this. Will update tomorrow.

On my PL450, which should be the same concept: single mode, 3.8mm diode, lower power;

Glass 3 Element Lens: 175mW
Aixiz Acrylic Lenses: __200mW
G2 LFL Lenses: ______225mW

Aixiz Acrylic by far has better beam specs.

Yep the acrylic will clean up all that splash and leave you with a perfect dot. Mostly because no light bounces around in the lens it is all absorbed into the housing.:)

Nice test... so the top was at 410mA and 3.5V. So a safe setup would be what... 350mA?

I am guessing 300mA is good. But only time will tell.:)

hmm....300mA seems to be pretty good for PL520, PL450B, and Opnext. Convenient :)

Are those AR coated Acrylic Lenses?
