noob question maybe?

im rather new to lasers and this site and i bet people ask this all the time! but i am making a DVD laser pointer and i am planning on using two AAs to power it (i may decide on it being rechargeable)
i would like the diode to last a long time but also give a fair bit of power!
i was wondering what would be the best setup for the diode circuitry:-? :-/
