Well.. I find myself needing another open can..My son, god forbid, got ahold of my 290mW build(bad news). He didn't just turn it on, but decided to twist it around then turn it on.. now my nice open can diode is an expensive LED:(.

So now that the optiarc drives are deactivated on Newegg, what is everyone pulling their long die open can reds from without breaking the bank?:)

Phew! Hope he didn't blind himself....sorry about your LD.

The Pioneer 115D is a good source for the long open can diodes:

If you catch Newegg with their free shipping sale, you end up paying about $35 per drive.

So, it's about $10 bucks more than we are used to with the Optiarc drives. (if you get the free shipping, because there is tax too, for me anyway)

Anyone have experience with any of these particular drives NOT to get?

I remeber LG being mentioned as a good one to get also. I am also thinking that the Optiarc 20x drives will all have the open-can in them.. but if I am wrong, i'd hate to find out the hard way lol.

I may go for the pioneer drive if it has any extra advantages, such as a slightly more powerful diode.

The only drives I know never ever to get are Lite-on and Samsung. The samsung drives because they have odd diodes, and the lite-on drives.........well. ::)

also stay away from SONY-NEC-OPTIARC AD-7203S - both diodes are plastic flat frame type.

I just pulled apart the one you mention phenol, sucked when I saw the diodes.

with some patience you can get it off with a drill. thats wat i did. drill it where it is thineest in the middle of one side then in the opposite side then u can lever the heatsink apart

Yes but there's no reason to get a Lite-on drive which has a short open can diode encased in a heatsink when you can get a pioneer drive which has a long open can diode and all you have to do is to cut the small heatsink with a pair of pliers to get it out.

I pulled apart the AD-7200A and that had the plastic diode also. :-[

So the LG Black 22X (LG-GH22NP20) Is the way to go? Also what do you want to run these at? 400-430mA? Like whats the max?
