So here's a link to my new laser I recently constructed: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Sv2EZqteIhE

I bought the dorcy metal gear flashlight and a diode from senkat. Senkat recommended that I use a capacitor also so I put a 47uF electrolytic 16v capacitor in parallel with the diode to help with voltage spikes that may result from turning the thing on and off. As you can see, the match lights instantly once it enters the beam. In the dark areas of my room you can even see a faint red beam. All in all it was a very simple mod. I popped off the lens, de-soldered the light, soldered in my module with my diode and the cap, filled with sticky tack for support, and widened the hole in the lens unit to fit the module through.

***EDIT***  Fixed Link {SenKat}

I believe you meant you put the capacitor in parallel with the diode.. ;)

You forgot to say how long it took you to remove the head of the flashlight, LOL ;D

Sweet build. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I should have stocked up on a few Dorcy Metal Gears as host bodies when my local Wally World had an entire box of them for $7 on final closeout.

Yea, whatever circuit is in there for the flashlight gives out the right voltage for the LD. And yes, I did mean parallel. Since senkat changed the link I can't edit it, says I don't have permission to post a link on this forum :/

Greetings Dan
Although Dorcy does put current and voltage regulators in there 1.5 volt aaa flashlights, I don't think the flashlight you are using has one. If after you remove the head of the flashlight and you also unscrew the small plastic ring in the flishlight body you can remove the 3 watt diode and atached circuit board. On this board is just a 10 ohm resistor. But there is sufficient room to install a regulator.  :-[

Looks very clean. Please tell me that's Aphex Twin in the background?

You bet it is.

When I had the light in there I measured the voltage with a multimeter and it came out to 2.99 Volts.
