new here, looking for a reliable 635nm 200mW(ish) laser

Hey all, I'm new here but not 100% unfamiliar with lasers.

I am looking for a later that puts out a wavelength of 635nm with an output power of around 200mW (class 3 I believe). The application is close range. The spectral density does need to be centered around 635nm (or very close) but from what I've seen this seems to me to be common value.

I've found a number of stores selling what they claim are 200mW 635nm lasers for under $100 (links below), but from what I've read here and elsewhere thus far it sounds like I should avoid these. I also don't know anything about what brands of laser pointers are good.

sum $100 links
200mW 635nm Red Laser 1000M Distance and 18650 Battery with the box Black
200mW 635nm Adjustable Focus Red Laser with 123 Battery 1000M Distance (Black) 200mW 635nm Adjustable Focus Red Laser with 123 Battery 1000M Distance (Black) - $101.55 : ShopXter.com, - Your Biggest Electronics Gadget Store. Best on Price, Good Quali

I have a feeling that these are not truly 200mW lasers since I can't see an interlock on the picture.

What are some good sites and brands to look at for what I'm after? I've seen around $400-$500 below.

635nm 200mw Flashlight Style Handheld Elite Pure Red Laser Pointer Kit Firedragon-
200mw 400mw 635nm laser pointers suffices to attract the laser hobbyists who are partial to these brighter red laser beam.
Buy off 50% Jetlasers 100mw to 500mw 635nm jetlasers red Laser Pointers PL-C right now. 200mw, 300mw, 400mw, 500mw 445nm blue lasers handheld at better pricing than any 635nm 300mw, 635nm 200mw and 500mw 635nm 1w red laser pointers.

Any help on where to go and what to look for would be helpful! And if my expectation on quality/price are off in either direction please let me know.

Shaun

The first two may be 200mW. What they are NOT, is 635nm. They're mislabeled 660nm typical red lasers.

The latter three are likely legitimate 635 (or at least in that range... maybe 640). As you can see, 635nm is much more expensive.

You can build one yourself for around $300 all-said-and-done if you have the know-how. I recently did so here:

Good luck! Let us know what you end up going with.

I could build one out of discrete parts from DigiKey, for about $50 worth of diodes (2 at $25 each) and then another $50 for the PCB and discrete parts. It would be more cumbersome than a handheld flashlight tho. I will probably go with one off the $390 pointers, I can always use it for fun when I'm done with it.

Show me $50 worth of Digikey parts that equate to 200mW of 635... ?

You could be right, but I'd be really surprised. I'll be happy if you're right :)

Get a HL63133DG or HL6388 diode from AVnet. HL6388 is capable of more power but has worse beam specs.
