here is a part of U.S law that might be interesting to you.... Just because you get issued a patent doesnt make it 100% official. some things you cant patent but the people at the patent office follow a set of rules and things do slip through the cracks. so it really is about how good your patent lawer is.

So is this where "STOP! there might be a patent somewhere about bouncing lasers off of mirrors!" joke came from.^^

Glad I saw this article because I was gonna try and combine a couple of LOC's with a pbs cube or maybe a knife-edged mirror. Don't wanna get sued!

All jokes aside, very nice build!

ROTFL !!!

I can't read German good enough, but i can read the diagrams well enough .....

Those peoples are really trying to patent "common optics laws" and "common optics working principles" ..... LOL !

They, from the draws, at least, looks they are really trying to patent the knife edge principle (fig. 3 and 4) the optical beam condenser principle (fig. 2), and the principle of paralleling beams for add power (fig. 7, 8 and 9) ..... i think that only if they find patent office employees stupid enough (or corruptible enough, can't say "never happened" :p), they can obtain this patent as it's showed on the draws .....

Is like if someone try to patent the wheel

Hmm....... Knife edge four 445nm for 4 watts of that glorious blue. I think the purplish tinge will shift more to a deep blue at 4 watts out of the final lens assembly. ;-)

I hope the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories' laser doesn't infringe on that patent. There is a nice animation of how theirs works on this page................

I wouldn't worry about the patent issue too much, even if you are intending commerical use.

Patents are nowadays almost automatically granted, but they have to be tested in court for actual validity the moment the patent holder tries, for example, to sue a third party that is infringing on the patent.

You could theoretically patent a spoon or a wheel, but won't be succesful in enforcing that patent.

I'm quite certain someone must have published the idea to use both knife edging and pbs combination to create a powerful laser beam long before they applied for the patent... and adding the beam expander won't change much about that is it is essentially a seperate component.

Note that publishing the idea is prior art, it is not required that any laser has actually been built in this fashion. Even the idea for a setup with only 4 lasers would, imho, be prior art.

I know this is an old thread but I just had to post here. As long as the design is changed by 15% it does not by law infringe on their patent. So by minor adjustment it can be done with ease and be totally legal.
