hy........i'm on this forum for about one year but mostly of the time inactive and i haven't time till now to built any laser so i have decided to do one
I have red almost all forum and decided to make DDL's driver which is done and working very well (tnx for this driver....it costed me about 3$ to make it).First LD that i drived was very old LD tahat i got free from my friend (it was 4x or 8x LD i still don't know).....i accidentally hooked it up on charged cap by putting A-metar in circuit an that was fatal for it.(my bad) :(.....this weekend comes new LD ;D from dvd burner 16x or 18x (i still don't know it is friends burner and i am going to buy it from him).

And the thing i don't know for sure is how much current i can let through the 16x diode and how much through 18x (pls write also for 20x and 22x) because someones says that u can easily put through 16x 250 mA and others are say'n that they can easily handle 280-300mA (of course im asking this when a good heatsink is used.....and im counting on relatively long LD's life)

I will post some pictures after i pass this ten posts

Closed can, if you want to be safe, stay around 250 ma. Open can can go to 420ma.

It depends on the burner. You'll have to extract the diode first then post pictures of it along with the brand and model number of the burner for one of us to identify it.

I've found some 18x burners with lousy lower powered diodes that died at 250mA, whereas some times I've found 16x's with open cans in them that can withstand over 400mA, it all just depends on the brand and model of the drive.

Also it's best not to use your ammeter, but instead measure the voltage across a resistor of a known value (a 1ohm is easiest) then use ohm's law to find the amperage. Most multimeters have really terrible accuracy on their current setting, plus many are limited to 200mA before you blow the fuse.

oke so its like this......i got the diode today and friend has told me that its 16x......also it is lg's dvd burner........i have connected everything as it should be and i put 220-230 mA (which i measured with A-metar hooked up in series with the LD)...........i still don't know how much more current i can give it because this is maximum with two 10 ohm resistors in paralel.tomorow i'm going to change that lol. although im not happy with burning cause i can't pop out a balloon if its further than 8 inch. can some one help pls????

here is picture of everything:(module, housing of everything, lence driver etc)

it is finally done.I still don't know what diode i have but i believe it is 16x (it is LG working on 320mA) i tried to test it and i put 420mA through it on a few seconds and it was fine.now it is working on 320mA and i will leave it like that.I measured the current with multimetar connected in series with LD.For power supply i used two nokia batteries connected in series (each one has 3.7v)

here are the pictures:

heatsink

LD working on 280mA

everything as it should be lol

and yes......i can cut electrical tape, burn matches.....

I still don't know should i leave it on 320mA or give it more????
what do you think guys????

If you want your 16X to last, leave it where it is. I usually set 16X's at 300mA. You need to move up to a long open can (18X-22X) if you want to drive it up at 420mA.

Peace,
