On the bright side now you have a nice heatsink to do whatever you wish with!

I guess maxing out the pot isn't very good for it... probably what you would expect as it is set to a lower level from the factory ;)

How long did it last in terms of total runtime?

At least 20 hours. In a test I left it running for 15+ hours with no problems and the day after that it still worked fine.

20 hours.. not great, but not crazy bad either considering you maxed it out. Good to know though, putting the power up a bit seems fine for playing around a bit but not for any permanent application.

Did you have a chance to take the module apart yet? I'm wondering how hard it is to replace the diode in these.

I did take it apart and it looks like you could easily replace the old diode with an open can assuming it fits.
I can post a picture of the completely disassembled unit if anyone cares.

Please post some pictures, always nice to have!

I reckon it will fit, common sizes are only 5.6 or 9mm for this type of laser diode, and the difference is easy enough to see.

I'm pretty sure you could throw another diode in there, for something that cheap the parts would have to be pretty standard. I wouldnt be suprised if it was just a form of aixiz module.

I use these ones for their parts, and have noticed that there is an issue with the driver board. I havent tested them, but avoid using the boards all together.

Re: My dealextreme $17.24 red laser module has die

I have three dx 70 units and I immediately maxed the pots on all of them. Soldered the driver leads to old usb connectors and plugged them into the computer. After about 5 hours of use each, they are still working fine. What exactly is the problem with the driver board? I haven't noticed anything.

I replaced my blown one with a SenKat red, no problem.....

That is what killed the original....and the SenKat the pots are crap, IMO ;)
