Don't worry....no "sword" or shotgun". I was thinking more on the lines of "WORLD'S MOST FRIGHTENING BLINDING WEAPON MADE BY KID IN HIS GARAGE!!!!".



I'm not sure what driver setup I'll use for this diode...probably just a LM317 circuit out of convenience.

Look I don't dislike you or anything but it's really not a laughing matter. You want views? That's fine but don't encourage people to think of lasers as light sabres and guns. Our hobby is at stake here. We don't need little kids having their parents buying them lasers that they know nothing about and swinging them around at each other all because they saw a video about it.

It promotes lasers as a weapon which is a huge no-no! We don't want to encourage bad usage of lasers. :tsk:
In the end it only hurts the hobbyists and the eyes of those who were involved in the misuse, should an accident occur.

It's not my videos that are the problem. In my "viral" laser videos it is clear that not only did I build each device, but also that I take eye safety seriously by wearing laser goggles. In fact my slogan is "always protect your seeing balls". I do know my videos reach a large audience, but because of that it brings a lot of smart people into the hobby. I know of a lot of people here that joined after seeing my videos, and had a curiosity to learn more.

The bigger issue facing the laser hobby is that anyone can go buy a very strong laser without any prior reading, whether from WL, here, or somewhere else. I do not promote buying lasers, only DIY projects. I feel that someone taking the time to learn to build a laser will be smart enough to handle one safely. IIRC the last time I made a video about a purchased handheld laser was in 2011...and my videos from then get essentially no views.

And to keep on topic...2.5A seems to be the sweet spot with these, correct? I'm gonna have to stack two LM317s in parallel I guess.

Well I'm not sure what to comment on all of this but I did show Styro my thread on how to make your cheap pen focusable and offered to let him take full credit for it if he wanted because he is a responsible young man. I think at this point lasers are so available and are sold everywhere online that maybe educating them on the smart way to build them along with safety may be the correct way to go. One thing is for sure, we could sure use more members who want to be informed and can also support the forum.
I also invited him to stay at our place if he wants to check out the colleges in our area. I only live a few miles down the road from RIT and about twice that for U of R and there's lots more hi tech about to explode here with 10000 more jobs at Photonics.
I wouldnt mind if he always referenced this forum to learn about how to build and use a laser safely emphasizing that these are not toys and no one should ever treat them as such. It would be good to explain why a particular unit was built regardless of whether it was just to see if he could.

agreed, styro got me in(and well kipkay but i dont mention that), but its actually a good thing i found this forum when i was like 8 or 9 by searching... and again on topic i'll have to agree with you, there havent been many tests on here so we'll be the first

Funny you mention this, but one of your videos did exactly that for me. I came across the 40W array you mounted on an airsoft M4, and I was hooked! I watched quite a few of your other videos, learning as much as I could (and you provide plenty to learn!) From there I came across DTR's eBay page, with a link here, and the rest is history. So I suppose I have you and DTR to thank for introducing me to the hobby! :thanks:

I agree and disagree... He clearly starts his videos out with safety precautions, etc... He's not promoting a weapon in a way your making it out to be! I do see where someone could get the wrong idea but still that's a stretch! Not everything is a weapon and surely No noob is going to see this and say wow, now I need to go build one, but wait I don't no how or have the funds to build it in the first place. Like he said, if someone were to try and build something like that they are going to take the time to learn and respect it.. That's no easy build. If anything he promoted how great this hobby truly is, the possibility's are endless if done correctly and responsibly

I didn't want to derail this thread any further but I have to say that I agree and disagree with his videos. Yes he mentions safety which is a ton better than most of kipkays videos but he also aims for views and has used terms we would never support the association of lasers. I guess you could say he's both helping and hurting the hobby. I suppose we all are by helping newer people on here but at least we don't go around calling our builds the frighteningly popular "light sabre". Please guys let's not talk more about this in this thread. I shouldn't have said anything at the start. My apologies.

I do appreciate the input everybody...but to be back on topic I finally got around to start messing with this diode. I finally opened my package from o-like and the packaging was pathetic. The diode was in a little plastic baggie that was contained in larger plastic container, which allowed the diode to rattle around during shipment!! The window is still intact, and I will post results when I power it up.

I have a 2.2A v7 Xdrive that I think I'm going to use. I may drop a rectifier diode in series with the laser diode in order to bump up the apparent forward voltage to the driver. The X-drive says it can go as low as 2.5V out but the datasheet for this diode says Vf is around 2.4V. I don't know enough about buck drivers to be able to determine whether this could be a safe configuration, so I'll play it safe and run it with a rectifier diode at the cost of efficiency.

Yeah the packaging is utter garbage they didnt even bother with an antistatic bag...
