Mirror reflecting red only?

Hello all,
I was looking at the threads about creating cheap yellow lasers by mixing the colors red and green together. Is it possible to get a type of mirror that can allow the same color (i.e. red) to pass through/reflect? Cause if that is possible, then I could make a really powerful laser from the 5+ Dvd burners that I have!:D Thanks everyone!:)

There are two optic pieces that can be used to achieve that.

One are "PBS Cubes", short for "Polarized beam splitter". They can be used to combine two beams into one.

Another is "dichroic mirror", or dichro for short. Those usually pass one color while reflecting other two.

In short, beam combining isn't too uncommon.

That's like one random result from andy_con's threads. Look him up.

Thanks Eudamonium! I'll get some of those cubes!:D Suggestions on where to buy one?
and any advice on how to blend those 5 burning red diodes I got?
It's going to be brighter than Wicked Lasers Inferno!:eg:

I got one red combiner PBS over at SurplusShed, you might wanna check that from time to time.

Other than that, I've got no idea where to get quality optics, when I think about it. If somebody could chime in with some sources, it'd be great!

Often, you can find PBS in combo DVD/CD drives. Although sometimes these are replaced with dicro

Any places where I can buy them cheaply? Those PBS cubes are expensive!:(

As Eud mentioned, this is not an uncommon task.

This is yet another situation where you are starting a brand new thread, on a very well covered topic, without bothering to use the search feature to do some of your own research first.

This is a topic that you could very easily have searched for and found an hundreds of results for, most of them directly on topic, rather than starting your own thread. This is not even a situation where not knowing the right keywords is to blame. If you had just taken the timing to put "combining beams" into the forum's search box, you'd have returned 294 threads on LPF, at least half of which, on quick glance, look completely relevant.

You can only use 1 PBS. You can't use dichroic for the same wavelength. Do a bit of research and you will find your answer. You need to know some light physics to fully grasp the concept of what to do.

You CAN knife edge 10 reds and fire em through 1 PBS 5 on 1 side and 5 on the other to get a tighter beam but this is not very efficient IMO and you get a fat beam.

Thanks upa227! I will research more instead of mindlessly clacking the post button.
@rhd: Quick glance? Not deeply looked into?
Whatever. As I said, I will research more.:D
Cheers everyone!:thanks:
P.S. Anyone have a 1W+ red laser?
Edit: Oh, but I was thinking about using multiple PBS's to construct a 1W laser with 4 diodes. Unfortunately they seem quite expensive. Can anyone point me to some trusted website where they sell it cheap?

That's correct.... not deeply looked into... I didn't read 294 threads for you. Sorry....

You can only use ONE PBS if you use a second it will spit the beams out due to the beam entering being double polarized.

Yes quite a few have 1w reds even with just 1 diode. https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/oclaro-700mw-638nm-diodes you drive this at 1.2+a and there you have it.

Check this out, me and a buddy of mine just co-funded one of these bad boys:
https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/oclaro-700mw-638nm-diodes

They go up to 1W of output at 1 Amp, you can see the image series if you scroll down.

Beam profile is nothing to write songs about but I don't mind, I want powerful visible beam in night sky, I'm not building anything sensitive to perfect beam pattern. If you don't mind, it's the diode for you.

Thanks for even more info everyone!:thanks:
great thread ARG. Really should have researched more, arg...
So if you knife-edge lots of beams, then you can get a fat but powerful beam? After that is it possible that you could use a lens to focus it down to the right shape?
Oh, and by spitting the beam out do you mean directly back upa227? Sorry don't know stuff like that. OH WAIT you meant splitting. oh, oops.
And if use a dichroic filter, is it possible to use multiple ones with it?
