Re: Most powerful Red Single mode diode that isnt C mount?

so what do you think we can get away with for drive current on these 840s? 450? 500?

Also will a flexdrive be the best driver for these?

I ordered two of these around a week ago so they should be coming in soon. I'm planning on gathering some PIV data with one and pushing it to 500mA to see what happens. I'm hoping these are a step up over the current LOC reds that we have available!

thanks for your efforts drake! i have my one diode in hand. Anxiously awaiting some info on these.

a flex may not be the best for a red diode, but i like them and i like that they are adjustable and i can run on one lipo

For drivers, the DDL is a good place to start. For a small footprint, the SOT-223 LM1117-ADJ are also
good in this range with a large enough pad area (Even single sided). They are a drop-in for the LM317. It
has to be a continuous negative if this is the same pinout as the other LPCs.

Which brings me to the point that these are so new that not even the pinout is known. techhood is a bit
sparse on the details. Anybody know the pinout? If not, I know how to find out.

Very good point, does anyone have a pinout for these?

One of them must make the ultimate sacrifice and guess on the pinout:crackup:
If it goes LED, you know it's not the right one:D

You could always look throught the window with a jewellers glass at the bond wires.

I just received a reply from Robinson, and he says they have the same pinout as the other LPC.

Failing that, there is a technique lifted directly from the laser FAQ. I have tried it. It works.

Take an incandescent flashlight bulb and shine it directly into the front of the diode, as close as you can
get it. The bulbs with the built-in lens work great. A small voltage, on the order of 1-100mV will appear
across the pins of the diode in the same polarity as the diode. If there is a photodiode, it will have a
much higher voltage, in the neighborhood of 500mV - 1.5V.

i've decided to jump my flex to the 412mW + range. i'll turn the pot all the way down and go with that setting. i have a groove coming from dtr (thanks again jordan) tomorrow and with any luck be able to post some beam shots of my new 650nm laser soon after.

as for the pinout - these Are diodes and current will only flow one way. this makes it pretty easy to determine what pin is what.

I got my diodes in the mail today! If I get time to test them today I'll post the results. I'm looking to push mine to 500mA.

Thanx for pushing the envelope on these. I have plans for these inexpensive devil's !!!!!!! A Multi Diode build with these....Can you say..."OCTADRAGON".....Like lasing a stick of RED dynamite !!!!

Optically it has been done.....with many, many more diodes.....but......can it be crammed into a handheld.....I say YES...it can !!!

Still though....as shot from Earth....to the Moon.....the alignment of the beams will not be perfect !!! HAHAHAHA !!!

I have everything set up to run this test but I cannot find my goggles!!! :( Most of my stuff is packed away in boxes now so I will continue to tear through it. One of the downfalls of living between two places is that I cannot ever get fully settled in...
