Just completed another active cooled unit this time it's in LOC 650nm:D.

I was able to put a little twist on it though. This unit will run at its pre-set 444mA and then when it's to hot you can shut it down and let the sunon fan just run cooling it during it's "off" duty cycle.

If thats not good enough then you could run the fan with the unit lazing:cool:
or if your batt. are starting to feel the drain of all that fun you could just laze.

How can this be done... How is jander doing this, well it's as simple as pie.

First you need this host. It's from Home Dep*t only 2.00 something
it housed a LED along with 5mW red. Runs off of 3AAA.

The action from the host to go in between the red and LED took the wiring burden from me. Although I didn't trust the crappy resisting diodes in the unit I replaced them with some meatier ones:)

There is a double spring in the driver board;)

here some pics of my heat sink/ active cooling module.

Double sided 3M thermal tape holding the driver on... very strong stuff

I hogged out the lens assembly from the LED for the pill housing the fan.
The bottom one is the same thing only shaved down to the size you see.
Notice the drilled holes under the brass compression nut.

The things sings like crazy. I'm using a Groove 2 driver "thank you dr".
and run times are TBA. I haven't tried running Li-primaries yet thats the next move.

Battery configurations are next. I tried 3 10440 in parallel and that seems the best for now.

I was looking for the mic on the phone. I wish it would have turned out how I wanted it to
Thank you for looking fellow LPF members:thanks:

That is an awesome build,, I cant wait to do something like that.. Lots of reading to do..

Thanks for the show and tell

That is the coolest "pill" design I have ever seen. I would have never thought a fan could fit inside a flashlight host!

+rep!

Nice build.
The pic of the replaced "crappy resistors".....those look like 1A diodes?

Correct good sir, I had to use them to stop the flow of electrons from going to one pad then the other.

The originals were the flat mounted (not sure of the value), but they got very warm and soldered in badly.

Well, it was a nice catch on your part by replacing what you did on the original circuitry. Surely it's now drawing more current than the original load. The small, usually minimum quality components needed to be upgraded for a real build in that host.
I just wanted to point out for the ones new to electronics that the black , banded at one end parts, are normally diodes not resistors.
Still a unique build sir.

How does the air get circulated by that fan? I can see the fan itself in other pics, but it's all the way inside the "pill". Are there holes around the fan through which it will move the air?

Yes, there by my thumb on the bottom of the pill is a groove that is reamed out for both wire and flow. The exit point for flow are under the nut. I made some more compressions today that are crossed drilled I'll post that build as well It's a much neater design

EDIT: the fan is directly under the driver. FYI

Is the diode pressed into a AixiZ module?

Is the compression nut a H.D. standard part?

What is the part that you have the lens screwed into?

thanks hk

Is the diode pressed into a AixiZ module? Yes, I use a diode press made by the Monk;)

Is the compression nut a H.D. standard part?If you mean Home Dep*t, Yes... it's a Watts A-218 1/2 OD x 1/2 FIP. I dremmel out the center and
split the ring. Turning the ring upside down and splitting it gives the ability to finger tighten the module or make for "swappable" Mods. The brass is very meaty and very workable in most 3 AAA host. I use 1/2 compression x 3/8 male for my 1AA or 1AAA builds.

What is the part that you have the lens screwed into? That is from a older dilda red. I have like 5 laying around. I like the ability to focus with one hand using my thumb and forefinger.

thanks hk

I hope this helps hack, I find it to be a great way to save for room and the like... I try to compliment the compression by getting hosts the have that industrial look. I use to listen to grind when I was a teenager, but now I listen to hymns:whistle:

YEAH Bro

you have been VERY HELPFUL
thanks
+rep
you solved a problem I have been pondereing for a long time.

Len

ps you say

" I use to listen to grind when I was a teenager, but now I listen to hymns" Is 'grind' band or a music genre?
new one on me!!

btw

I used to work and live at the 'Everglades Wonder Gardens'

Great post, and one I'll definitely be working towards, active cooling that is, when I get a bit more experience.

I always wondered how to fit a fan into warmer builds because I'm about to embark on my first high power red before going onto my first 445, and always came up with ideas that seemed too cumbersome, or just plain ugly, but yours is neatly done.

Thanks for posting :)

No problem thank you for the compliment. I love this laser and the 2 active cooled 445nm I have are schweet very long run times.:)
