Hi everyone, my LG GH22NS50 burner(22X) is dead. And I will use red laser diode for my laser pointer.Bud I don't know which is maximal current for its operation.Because it is not standard laser diode package. It has four wires but only two of them are used(pure red LD) because it has separated 5.6mm IR laser diode.I have read other topics and someone say that this type LD can handle 400mA,someone else say it can handle 500mA.So i don't know how much I current put in it before destroying LD.

p.s.I have old 16x 5.6mm LD which can handle 380mA of current without destruction for long time.

Hi, i have tested diode but I discover that is not red diode it is IR diode in non standard package.LG GH22NS50 use standard 5.6mm open can red laser diode. Its maximal current is 500mA @ 3V.But I dont know which is output power. Can someone say which is power output for this current and voltage settings.

My semi-educated guess is: Long open can 660nm diode @ 500mA=~300mW. I do not know what exact diode is in that drive and if that max current is for pulsed operation or cw. 420mA is about right for a LOC for good long life

Current is constant 500mA without any problems. But over 500mA they will dim.

Im running an open can red laser diode from a LG GSA-H55N , which is basically a 20x, @600mA and went all the way upto 750mA (in a HUGE heatsink - copper core with aluminum fins) at 700mA and 3.8v it tends to die after 30 seconds!!
I dont know if you're using the same LOC, but mines still alive and kicking @600mA after 3+ duty hours!!

Will post the pictures later right now i dont have the transfer cable ;) !
Have a great day!

ZEN!

I have don't try put over 600mA because it got very hot and start dim.I think because I use cooler that come with diode.I will lathe custom copper cooler. With direct diode insertion in it(no aixiz module) for better cooling. And will test maximum stable current.

King is dead. After 10 minute working on 3.3V @600mA laser diode dim and never bright up.I made custom copper cooler with direct insertion laser diode in it.Does anyone know because diode burn if they was good cooled?

Diodes also fail from optical stress, and not just thermal stress. I would guess that if it died gradually while in a massive heatsink, it was because you were pushing it beyond it's optical capability.

Aha,ok.Next time I will use lower current settings.Does 24X laser diode from Sony optiarc can handle 600mA?

Did you run it for straight 10minutes and it went dim?
Or you powered it on for short durations , a total of 10minute period..

I power it for short durations (1-2 minute) in a total period of 10 minutes.

What driver were you using!! with the LM317 it works quite smooth afaik..
