I bought a 200 mW laser off of DealExtreme.com.
I found a lot of videos showing it lighting matches and popping balloons with a visible beam.
But I cant even see the beam on a wall less then one meter away.
Am I just using something wrong or what?

Red or green?  Can you give us the SKU number of the laser?

Peace,
dave

P.S. If you cannot see the spot on the wall, something is wrong

It's red.
The SKU is 11315.

I can see the spot on the wall sometimes.
I gotta focus it into a really small spot though.

OK. That is what we call the "dilda laser" around here. You should be getting somewhere between 160-210mW. You should see a very bright light on the wall and burn stuff without any problem. Make sure your batteries are good. If they are, you need to return it to DX for an exchange.

I'll try switching the batteries when I get home.
I only have a few pairs that I bought from DX and they aren't sold here so they better be good.

Hope it isn't broken.

But one thing.
The stuff(the rounded thing) in front of the focus lens on the laser comes off and there isn't anything in it.
Is it supposed to be like that or is there supposed to be a lens in that too?

There is one more thing we can try if the batteries are good. However, it requires you to open the laser and mess with the pot. If you mess something up in there, DX won't take it back.

The rounded part attaches to the lens nut so there must be "something" in there. If you screw off the rounded part, the threaded part (that actually screws into the laser) is the lens nut. The lens is inside the nut. There is only the one lens. If you screw the rounded part out there will only be the diode inside the body part. If you look inside the lens nut and there is nothing "there", then you have a different problem.

I'm really not too good at taking things apart and fixing them.
I fried my calculator somehow when trying to fix it.
So I'll just send it back if the batteries are working.

Okay then that's not the problem.

Ah I'm so happy right now.
I changed the batteries and the dot on my wall was so big it blinded me for a second.
Friggin' awsome.

Excellent! It is a very basic lesson that all who work with electronics must learn. If it isn't working, start by looking at the power source. Quite often it IS just the batteries ;)

Have fun with it, but keep safety in mind. Remember it actually IS bright enough to blind you or someone else forever.

Yeah I knew that but I always forget about the batteries.

If you car stops running, 1st, check your gas gauge. ;D Or, if your car doesn't turn over, it might be the battery! :p 2nd. [Dave's words] "Check the least expensive avenue first" [\Dave's words]

I'll do that =D
Thanks for all the tips guys.
But one more thing. The batteries die after a few minutes of usage but when I put them in again later, then they work for a few more minutes.
Is that supposed to be happening?

The laser will get very hot after using for a while, you need to let it cool down after using it again.
