Found a LOC diode smaller than 5.6mm

I was tearin up a DVD burner from a local computer shop, it's a DVD-RW DL laptop drive, 20x i do believe, will confirm the model # of the drive in the AM.

it had a WEIRD tiny Long Open Can diode... and it is at least half the diameter of a 5.6mm standard LPC-815 LOC diode.

can anyone shed some light on this maybe? im just curious if they make a module, or adapter for this diode. and if it is even worth my time. im assuming since it's small it cant handle the same load as an LPC. just an educated guess.

Thx in advance for any help.

Pics in the morning.

Maybe a 3mm diode like those that are used for laptops burners ?

No part numbers of any type, on the diode ?

Daguin found his in the 8x BDR-203 drive (pioneer blu ray). He never said if he did anything with it though.

That may be.. but it's still a burner, so I'd assume it can handle a decent amount, at least enough to burn...

^ building an adapter ? ..... :D

something like in the draw (not in scale) ..... need to use machines, for this, but i think it can be done ;) ..... and then the adapter can be pressed around the original diode, or glued on it using thermoconductive glue, depend from the precision of the building (the external diameter depend from your aixiz module, if you have one of the ones that had too much large holes, adapt it to your measures).

Anyway, i think is more easy build a ring like this, that build a new head aixiz-like, with the changed inside diameter :)

just an idea :)

Thx for the info HIMNL9! +rep, great sketch.

i think this may not be worth my time. im going to hook it up today, and at least see if it works, i will not run more than 280mAh to it until i know its specs.

havent tested it yet... kinda hesitant to due to NO heatsinking whatsoever, not even an aixiz module...

do they make 3.8mm mounts?

If you test it in under one second bursts without heatsinking you will be fine. Just don't let it heat up at all. Plus, you don't need to test it with full power, 125mA will be good enough to see if it powers up.

I don't know of any commercial 3.8mm mounts that we can get for cheap, but you can probably have some one machine you a mount. I'm pretty sure the makers of "the chunk" will do 3.8mm.
