Some have been testing these flat red diodes from LG 8X sleds...

Dave gave me some of these to mess with. Thanks Dave! :thanks:

I found that it is easy to mount them into a modified AixiZ module using some thermal adhesive.

The center hole is drilled so that the 'square peg' top of the diode fits in tight, and it is auto-aligned...

This module modification is sized to work perfectly with my 650-G-1 glass lens assembly. And will also get focus with an AixiZ acrylic lens! :)

These pictures will show you the pin connection as well:

I tested it at 400mA's, and it gives 235mW's. (650-G-1)

I was expecting a tad more power from what others have been reporting...

One strange thing... Although the dot is sharp, I notice a line with small spot on one side only...

Any input on this? It's not the alignment of the diode. Because I held the lens and diode loose, and moved it around to see if this effect would go away, and it would not...

If you want one of these modified AixiZ modules, send me a PM... :) ($10 bucks)

The single line is probably similar in origin than the 'wings' observed around the dots produced by some laser diodes. Perhaps its only there on one side because the pedestal the die is mounted on blocks/reflects the other half?

Since solution for a square peg/round hole problem though... is thermal contact good between diode and aixiz?

Yes, the thermal connection is good. (IMO)

The two mounting pads on the diode heatsink, are connected directly to the machined bare brass of the module with thermal adhesive. (Arctic Silver)

You know I'm going to need a couple of these. I'm not at home again this weekend. I'll get back with you again the first of the week.

RE: the artifact -- On the front of the heat sink, there is a "window" of some kind. Could this be causing it?

Peace,
dave

I have only tried it with the plastic 'window' peeled off...

I peeled it off just like you do with a LCC diode.

Did you say you wanted a couple of the modified AixiZ modules Dave? Let me know and I'll send a couple your way, as a thanks for the diodes! :)

Yes and yes ;)

I also just got another one out of the LG 10X sled if you want to play with it. The heat sink is different on the one out of the 10X sled than the 8X sled. The diode "appears" the same, but the heat sink is "beefier."

I sent one of these to Mike, but just got the second one.

Peace,
dave

Sure that would be great Dave! I would be interested to see if it has the same line and spot on the side...

And if it will need a differently modified module.

I'll PM you my address again, and I'll get a couple of modified modules headed your way!

Is the heat sink electrically isolated from the diode?

No...

The diode heatsink is negative...

Dave ---

I got the flats -- Thanks for your generocity.
I am busy with continuing education for my license right now. I will get to them next week.

Thanks a bunch.

No worries. They were starting to pile up ;)

Peace,

The modules arrived today, Jay.

Thanks

The red from the 10X sled went out yesterday

Peace,
dave

Hope they work for you!

Hey let me know if you get a line and spot on one side with these flat reds...

Jay ---
You got me beat -- I'm getting only 150 mW at 400 mA -( I may have an allignment problem since this little 8X is hard to mount.

Hmmm... that's quite a difference alright...

Maybe too, because I'm using my 650-G-1??

But that's still a huge difference. So something else must be different like you say...
