First DVD burner pointer build

This is my first post on this forum.

This is, strictly speaking, my first build, though i'm confident with my soldering, electronics, and machining abilities.

I'd like to build a (relatively large, physically) red laser pointer, build in this case meaning assemble the diode into a heatsink/module and solder on a driver.

However, i have access to a lathe and want to make the pointer body myself, and then build the laser assembly into that. I could salvage a flashlight with one of those end-mounted click buttons and screw it on the end to act as the power switch.

I'm thinking of using a diode from a DVD burner, but the burner i disassembled (TS-H653) contained extremely small, flat looking diodes which would have been impossible to solder or mount, having leads around 1mm in length.

I want the diode to output between 70 and 120mW, what places would i be best off looking? assuming that i bought the diode separately instead of salvaging it. I've seen 100mW reds range from 10 to 100s of dollars, so i'm suspicious as to which sites to trust.

If i DO get the diode from a dvd burner, which devices would i be best off looking in. I know at least that most DVD PLAYERS do not have burner diodes installed.

My first plan would be to get an Aixis module, assemble, and then build the pointer body around that.

All other beginner tips, such as recommended batteries, will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

For diodes, you can try ordering from DTR (he's a member here, and trusted)
You can also try HighTechDealz. I have ordered from them before, and they're reliable. But they don't specify what power the diodes can be driven to.
Cajun Lasers also has diodes similar to DTR, but they're out of stock when I last checked.

As for extracting from a DVD burner, I have no idea. I tried extracting one from an 18x PC burner, but I haven't gotten a heatsink for it yet, so I haven't driven it above 80mA. A rule of thumb would be the higher the writing speed, the better the diode.

Hope this helps you.

An LPC-826 is what you are looking for, they are around $10 and will give you around 300mW. They are currently available on Cajunlasers (previous post above has the link). A LM317 is also a good driver to begin with (or a LM2941), both run of any two Li-Ions. I attached a PDF with both driver's schematics.

I would also suggest DTR. With my first build (link in my sig) I used his 300mw 650nm in copper module. It's already pressed into the module and has nice long lead wires soldered to diode pins. For me personally, i found it perfect for a first build. Low cost, easy to make/buy a driver.

I also HIGHLY recommend DTR. I cannot find cheaper prices anywhere, nor can I find better service anywhere. And THAT is a rare thing indeed.
