Simply put it adjusts it's self automatically, if you put in 7.2v (it needs 4.5v to run) it knocks it down to what the LD needs (~2-3v) and  the rest is dissapated as heat. You use the resistors and pot to control current.

Oh and if you are buying at RadioShack they have different looking "chips" that are all the same in the LM317T pack so far I have two different looking ones but they are the same, just different makers. The cardboard package clearly says LM317T so don't worry if you get two that don't look like each other. If you don't understand I'll post pics tomorrow.

ok becuase the ones i got have like top rounded corners and notches in the sides

I have 1 like this and 1 squared. Look really close under semi-bright light and they are marked LM317T.

well i got the lm317t and hocked it up i am using like the same battery ass u but the driver is only putting out a maxe current of 234mA



EDIT:
acyually mines is a 7.2v 1100mah

Tolerances of resistors can change some so that sounds right to me. It won't max over 250ma and kill your diode.

which laser diode are you gonna use?
If it is a stonetek 16x sony, no need to.

well i kinda want to use a hightechdealz 20x
but if i have to use a 16x i will

also my circuit is still like putting out 6-7v but u said early it should be putting out 3-4v
