Here's my goal:  I want to run a 5mW red or green (with IR filter) laser module in a Mini-Mag body with two Eneloop NiMH cells for use as a laser sight.

Since I can't post links, and I can't even post URLs, you'll need to remove all the extraneous spaces and de-mutilate the URL.

Because let's face it, even in paintball, a 2AA minimag isn't enough light to play by, but a laser sight is downright useful.  Since the marker's so closely designed around the Mini-Mag, there's not much you can do to it regarding lights - the brightest modified Mini-Mag is only half as bright as I want.  I'll be using a Surefire.  Can you please help a n00b out and point me at a good method for limiting the laser to 5 mW output?  I'm not above using a series resistor for this, since I only ever intend to use it on high-grade NiMH cells.

:)Welcome to the forum, you will be able to posts links after 10 posts :)

Here is your link:

Piece of cake use one of these, (or similar) for the red:

Or one of these for green, (or similar):

These come with the driver already attached, just fit into host body and connect the wire to battery-contacts, they are already driven at 5mW, pretty inexpensive too. You can drill a hole into the original-lens and mount your module using a 1/2" ID "rubber-grommet", no heatsinking needed, with these lower-powered modules.

BTW, I am also a paintballer, these are going to take an enormous amount of hits if you are an aggressive-player. I tried to use some red-laser sights for guns on my E2 Electro-cocker, each time I mounted one It was destroyed in a game or two. Maybe yours will be more robust. Other players will likley whine about the green-laser.
Good luck and happy-building,
DH

You could get this for just $5.

It's 5mW so it'll be sufficiently bright in low lighting and still eye safe.
Plus, you don't even have to modify the minimag.
Just stick the pins in the hole where the light bulb goes, glue it down, and you have a laser.
You can do the same with this:
http://www.aixiz.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1_25&products_id=97 but you'd have to strip the wire. It's only $11
This one might be better because it has lower wavelength and will be a little brighter.

These are also small enough to fit in the light without removing the plastic lens on the minimag so it'll still be water resistant and won't be as easily damaged during the game.

Edit: Oh yeah, you'd have to make the hole in the minimag reflector larger and make sure the focus on the laser is set to infinity.

Thankss for the heads-up on paintball and laser sights. That's why I wanted to go with the Mag mod by the way - one, it can have a solid lens over the fragile bits, and two, Mags are built like a tank (and more important, moderately waterproof). I'll post back if I get around to building something that'll survive a couple hits (testing may be the problem, I don't play much.

Pierce, that bi-pin module is absolutely *perfect*. I'll be getting one of those and seeing what I can make it do ;D

I dont think any laser is safe for the eye. Mostly because its a focused beam of intense light
