Ok I wanna make another DVD burner. Are 22x diodes significantly brigter than 16x? I don't know whether I should buy a new Sony 16x red diode, or by a 22x burner from computer geeks. Whats the difference in mW?
I heard LG models have good diodes (not plastic ones like Samsung). Is that true?

Also is 6v through a rkcstr driver good to power red diodes, or is that too much.

Thanks

The HOTTEST DVD diodes that we have been using are the 'long open can' diodes. Here is a really inexpensive GB for some sleds:

With these diodes, you can expect about 245mW's @ 420mA's with an AixiZ acrylic lens. Or about 300mW's @ 430mA's with a Meredith glass lens. :) (use a good heatsink at this power)

The rkcstr driver requires 2.5 volts over and above the LD operating voltage, so a 6 volt supply should be good for a red. But probably 2 X 3.6 is better, because once your 6 volt supply drops below about 5.5 volts, the driver will drop in current...
