I'm working on combining 2 red diodes for a scanner. I am using two LOCs. How do I wire them up so that they are at the same current level as they are being modulated. I am planning on using a flexmod driver (if drlava starts making them again).

Also, I have seen many dual red builds that include LASORBs. Are these really necessary in a scanner?

Lasorbs...YES in a scanner setup.

Wiring, in series, + from driver to + on diode number 1. - on diode number one to + on diode number 2. - on diode number 2 to - on driver.

Simples...innit!

Beam alignment (and keeping it aligned)....not simples:)

lasorbs on £2 lasers......

so not necessary

a LOC is £2 a lasorb is $8, so more than the laser. if you had a £90 laser diode then yes you would want to protect it

Any particular reason that LASORBS are more necessary in scanners? Is it just because of the series connection between the diodes in this case?

lasorbs arent designed for scanners.

they are designed to add additonal protection to laser diodes. they can be used to protect any laser diode, so in a scanner or pointer.

people seem to want points for free these days so no one is willing to pay $8 to put a lasorb in

Sorry, why not use the old, efficent (and cheaper) diode-capacitor-resistor in parallel to the LD ??

Place in parallel to the LD an 1N4148 diode (reversed respect the LD, ofcourse), an 1K resistor and a 10nF capacitor, and you have the same protection .....
