i was wondering if you can use the 5mw drivers to run a 250nw diode. it looks to have a micro trim pot on it. i was wondering if i can remove the old diode and put the new diode on it and use it. will this work or am i just dreaming ;) oh if you havent figured it out i am a noob ;D

As long as the thing provides the right voltage, maybe you can use the pot to get the desired current :p

so then if i have a 3 volt max diode then see if i am getting that voltage. i dont know the voltage just using that as a referance.

oops almost for got i want to watch out for the Ma to right or just the voltage?

The mA is what's important. Get that right and the voltage will sort itself out.

cool that is really help full but i just want to stay around the recommended voltage right it is like i can use 12 volt at 200 mA and it will do the same as 3 volts at 200 mA just want to clairfy that so i wont blow it up.

oh one other question what will pop a balloon at a further distance? a 250 mw by 650 nm or a 1000 mw by 808nm ? they will both pop balloons and burn but does the wave lenght do any thing to the power of the diode or is it just the difference between seeing and not seeing the beam?

The wavelength doesn't matter that much.What matters is that the 1W 808nm diode is multimode and will have really bad divergence.Of course it will depend on what optics you use.But using a standard collimating lens , my bet would go on the 250mW singlemode diode. :p

Yes the wavelength does matter. Generally, most things absorb infra-red whereas not everything will absorb red too well (if it's red, white, or any colour containing red it won't work too well). Of course, the red is far safer.

Won't make that much of a difference between 650nm and 808nm :p

Well, the problems you talked about are a lot more significant. What I'm saying is that for a given W/m^2, more IR will be absorbed than 650nm. Getting that intensity will be a lot more difficult with an IR diode than a red, of course.

At a distance at least.The difference between 1mRad and 3mRad is HUGE.
But I think the difference between a red on a black balloon and an IR on a black balloon is most likely neglijable :p Beam specs will make most difference.

hi

i have got a 1w 445nm laser diode,

i was wondering what sort of driver and current is best for the laser so get max output?
