Hi Guys, First post on the site. After having seen someone in greece with a 50mW Green laser waving all over the sky I had to buy one. And one thing lead to another until I was playing with 400mW & 700mW huge lasers and then i purchased the Polaris From laserglow & Arctic from WL And oh boy a new Breed of laser entered my home - Anyway

Youve all seen this its probably the third most famous laser pointer around next to the Short 1mW you find on the streets and the 5mW eBay one.
sku_11315_1.jpg

This laser claims to be 200mW and no doubt its around that. After further research I then found its actually a modified 150mW. These things sell like blonde hookers - theyre all over the world and the Company that makes them potentiometer mod EVERY SINLGE ONE.

A 15* Degree clockwise twist of the pot makes your laser reach an output of 236mW for around 17 seconds which Is all the time i needed to record the output and also when the diode dies!

If you left the laser is dies in around 1 hour of use. It actually states do not use more than 60 Seconds or so - Probably because the damn diodes temperature is "Over 9000"

So anybody who has seen this laser and think; "hey! for 30 bucks I can light a match" Its not worth it & its a dissapointing laser they wont replace.

Why would a 200mw laser need 6.4V of juice.

many thanks forum

Funny I always thought this laser was overdriven seeing how alot of them die fast. Guess this proves why you stay away from DX.

Hey, would you mind doing a review of your 1.3w Polaris? I did a review of one of the lower power Polaris units, and want to see how the optics compare...

That is called a duty cycle most lasers have them. It is to prevent them from overheating. Very few handheld lasers can be ran non-stop.

Because if it were one lithium battery, The voltage would be too low to allow for a linear driver. It is cheaper to lengthen the battery case a little bit than it is to switch to a boost driver.

Also, well done... killing your laser. :gj:

Agreed, and thats murder....
anyhow what LPM do you have?

You can re-use the host for a LOC red diode. They can handle that power with ease.

Exactly. A LOC or LCC can take upwards of 350mA with ease, while the diodes in these are good for around 250mA (for 150-200mW out). It isn't perfect, but neither are most Chinese lasers.

Meanwhile, ladies and gentlemen, is a very good reason you don't pot-mod your lasers. Good work on murdering your first laser. I hope you're proud.

The manufacturer sets it for a reason- and a damn good one at that. It's your own problem that you killed it. It's your fault, not the manufacturer's.

The manufacturer, in most cases, knows better than you will. They have all the data for the diode, and use said data accordingly. You didn't think we still were in the dark ages where they pot-modded 5mW greens, right?

Now, as I've stated before, if you've done some research (like many of us here without so much money and with a brain cell or two) have done some research beforehand, you'd have realised that most of these have received pretty positive reviews, and the majority have turned up near or on-spec. Said research would also explain what a duty cycle is, as well as understanding what a linear driver is.

As it is, my case still stands. For $30, it wasn't bad, and even today, it isn't too bad of a deal.

Forgot to mention - living in the UK I work for SkyLasers. its my Job to test every laser on all aspects from weatherproofability to what happens if a customer mods our lasers and claims them as broken that way we know what to do about retrns with certain lasers.

I was purposefully pointing out that nobody should pot-mod this laser because after careful testing here is my result.

Thanks ;)

To begin with, you shouldn't be pot-modding any lasers at all.

Secondly, I'd just like to let you know that the real SKYLasers is actually based in the United States (manufactures in Hong Kong), and sell nothing like what your display picture sells.

If this: eBay My World - skylaserpointer is your store, then you're selling nothing but cheap knockoffs of other lasers.

Those products are a joke, not to mention you've stolen photos from the real SKYLasers too, or your claims of green lasers with Sony diodes. Not to mention the Arctic knockoff which just happens to be mislabelled (deliberately, I might add) as 473nm, and also using photos stolen from a member here.

Or what about this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1mW-laser-lazer...9?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&hash=item19bbff0a2f

Which just happens to so tastefully copy CNI's pen design? So much for original non-Chinese products. Whatever it is, it's certainly a damn copy.

Perhaps the most ironic thing is- here you are, complaining about DX, and more likely than not all your 'products' are the ones turning up underspec.

How tasteful.

EDIT: 808 posts. I'm nearly invisible! :na:

Oh snap!
And the 808th post, didn't "see" that one coming ;)
+1 for the "right between the eyes" factor, even if it turns out to be untrue that made my evening

I C WUT U DID THAR. Well, I didn't actually, because these IR goggles work pretty damn well. :p

Anyway, I've been aware of 'his' store for ages. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who knew that it was a ripoff of the real SKYLasers.

The real one, as I've said, is in the US. And their site is down at the moment, so, unfortunately, I can't link you to the real deal.

Normally I would've given him a bit of time, but I really don't like people who just barge onto a forum, and assume they're correct about everything, especially when they're not.

I've been running my 200mW new style dilda from O-like pot-modded at 240mW for months. No problems at all so far.
