Just depends. If some manufacturer has a lot of stock and decides not to use them or not to make the product they were going in to, they can show up cheap on the surplus market.. My guess is that if some of these are indeed 635nm.. most likely they're from the same source of diodes that that ebay seller that was selling 40mw 635nm diodes cheap a little while back got them from. Large quantities of 635nm's on the market isn't really common, and the timing is too close I think for it to be a coincidence.

I actually snagged one of those! wish I had bought more.

Good luck on the group buy guys

Throw money away? If $12+shipping is too much for you, then lasers probably aren't the best hobby for you.

Besides. One can never have too many lasers. Of any wavelength. :D

Though personally I could care less about 'burning power' myself. It's fun for all of 15 seconds. I'm just in it for the pretty lights.

If you had bothered to read the rest of my post, you would have figured out I already have one. I don't just buy things just because I have money, I give each potential purchase the amount of thought they deserve. "Do I already have one?" "Will I get my moneys worth of satisfaction (15 seconds just won't cut it)?" "Do I need batteries; a charger?" You're paying $12 + shipping for something you don't even know the likelihood of getting. Only ONE person here claimed it was a 635 without using a spectrometer. You could, you know, save towards a laser you really want. It doesn't matter how much money you have to throw away, it's still throwing it way and in most peoples cases here assuming they would be uninterested in getting a plain old 660, it's throwing it away on a lottery ticket.

You could care less about burning? Well that doesn't say much.

12$ is with shipping already included, and the likelihood of getting it is more like 99%.

Okay I don't know if it really will be 635nm, I thought you meant the likelihood of
anything showing up at all in the mailbox.

It's only free shipping if you live somewhere DX will ship lasers to.

And Townes... Nobody is forcing you to participate in this. Everybody in it knows there's a risk.. Though you know something? That's fine with me.. since if you don't take the risk, then your chance of getting a cheap 635nm pen is the same as winning a lottery you don't buy a ticket for...Zero..

All the best things in life carry some risk.. Though more importantly it's our money.. I think we'll all spend it as we damn well please. heh.

This risk you're talking about; it's not like 10% chance of getting a 660 or a 20% chance of getting a 635. It's whatever probability you can derive from one person starting a thread claiming they got a 635, and I repeat, without a spectrometer: the probability being x% ie unknowable. Would DX really use $100+ diodes for pens selling at $12? Does it not make more sense to save and buy a 635nm pen or module? The risky option isn't always the smartest and pessimism isn't always the enemy.

Also, please don't act like I'm ordering people not to participate in the group buy. That's not my thing. I'm just telling it like it is. I'm seeing quite a few people here jump the bandwagon and spend their money for that one shot that maybe, just maybe they'll get what they want and it seems to me, an opposing view based on explained logic, however unpopular, needs its fair share of attention so everyone fully knows they're getting themselves into. The truth can be a buzz kill but it's not my fault you disagree so don't shoot the messenger.

$100 diodes? I want what your smoking. You can get 635nm diodes for a few bucks.

My thought is that these may be 5mW diodes but are being called 50mW because they are much brighter than their 5mW 650nm brothers.

Also this technique the OP used is actually used often and proven assuming he did it correctly.

Read my edited post ^^^

Also if you want to go that route then yes the 40mW diodes which are good to 70+mW can be had at $20 shipped on occasion. I know as I have one. Take out shipping and paypal, ebay fees from that $20 and assuming the seller of this diode was not running a charity they would have needed to purchase the diodes at only a few dollars a piece to make enough profit for it to be worth while. :D

Yeah. But I wouldn't get your hopes up about seeing any more of those $20 40mw 635's anytime soon. They're considerably more than that if you try to buy them in any small quantity (<1000) from any vendor i've talked to.. and the ebay seller going from hundreds of them to selling out basicly overnight (said one person bought all he had left) shows you how cheap they were at $20.

But regardless. If my pens are 650nm, i'll be happy, and if they're 642 or 635, well, i'll still be happy.

Like I said before. You can't have too many lasers.

I know my point was that if the ebay seller was able to obtain them at such a low price I see no reason a laser manufacturer could not as well.

However I think its more likely that its a 5mW 635nm being called 50mW. We all know how accurate these ratings tend to be from Chinese sellers.

True. but my LPM won't lie.. Though I doubt 5mw of 635 could be passed off as 50mw of 650nm.. Maybe 15 or 20mW, but not 50.

But the LPM will tell when I get my pens.
