thanks dave! i've run across de-caning in a few threads and never knew Why. so if i were designing ld's my decision on whether to enclose it or not would be based on how well i want to protect the innards?

That is one reason.

Also, some of the die strata are made of materials that are hygroscopic.
The diodes are generally filled with an inert gas to eliminate moisture from surrounding the die

Finally, an exposed die is vulnerable to "stuff" settling on the face of the die

Peace,
dave

steve-o from PL posted this link
Mitsubishi 635-638nm 500mw CW Laser Diode DIY/1pcs/pck | eBay
So i sent them a message.
i hope they have them in stock, when they do im going to grab up as many as my pockets can afford.
lol I got that link from here a few months ago .. just been hanging on to it. I got a response from a girl there a while back but still waiting now.
re: decanning- another reason to decan a LD is to install a micro-lens very close to the emitter.

I was running my 300mw at 946mA thru one of Moh's drivers/C6's, I was outside with it in the cold & taking photoes, ran it for probably 4 minutes, it was not even warm to the touch, before I stepped out I had put it in the freezer for a bit :)

upon returning inside I fired her up again and the beam went from bright to dim, not real dim but dimmer :) I tried it again in around ten minutes and the same thing happened.

Add that bit of info into the recipe!

If you start pushing the pieces around in there, you run the very real risk of breaking the tiny wires connected to the die

Or scrape them against the output mirror facet of the diode, rendering it useless the next time you power it up.

Also, the pieces of a broken window tend to be larger than the hole in the case, so getting them out without removing the entire can would be very tricky.
