eh, i know it's nothing new, but I'm doing it too, and I've run into questions...

I made the nice driver that works with two cr23 batteries, and powered up the diode, it made a really really bright large unfocused dot on the wall as I turned up the pot, and seemed solidly bright, didn't get too hot either.

I was wondering, the axis module, is it's focusing lens what turns the laser diode into a pointer?

thanks.

yeah.. mine, until focused with a module, is more oval with a bunch of strange dots inside it and quite scattered.

YOu won't want to play with that thing much more until You do get a module. The module acts as a heatsink and you can damage the diode very quickly without it. I can't count how many folks here have killed diodes while playing with them outside of modules. I think the # is in the 100's!

Oh shit!
I just killed my 16X DVD burner laser diode by connecting 4 AA batteries!!!
I spent $4 to buy it :'( :'( :'( :'(

$4? damn, I had a $5 cup of coffee today from starbucks.

anyhow, here's a picture of my giant floating invisble circuit board and diode turned on:

yeah $4 is a cheap diode. no big loss.senkats are $20

i have only used 2aa/3aaa so far. without a module or any sort of cooling. diode doesnt get hot at all unless i run it for like 10 minutes straight. even still its only moderately warm.

is the uh..diode.. disconnected in that picture?

HAHAHA JECS. I actually though you meant the laser diode! I was like DUH NO!! Then I saw the normal diode not connected and thought. Well now I'm the one that's stupid Not JECS!!!

id be impressed if he got the ld to light up without it being connected ;)

lol!!!! yea, I noticed that last night before someone here did, oddly enough, I swear by it, but I measure the SAME voltage with OR without that diode connected

I thought these things were supposed to cause a 0.7v drop?

I Think that is just when there put in series, since you have it in parallel i dont think it drops any?

so the diode only acts to prevent the battery in reverse from reaching the LD?

Basicly yes, thats why the diode is put in backwards, the line normaly should point to the negative but since its for reverse protection its not.

is there a cheaper way to collimate the laser into a beam than using a module from DX?

i mean, what kind of optics do I need to buy from those places that have optics for sale, and has anyone figured out a ghetto-fabulous way to do this?

the aixiz module is basically just the best way to go. it gives a bit of a heatsink plus you can adjust the distance of the optics. if you are inside the us you can order 10 blank modules from aixiz on ebay for $30 shipped i think. less than $40 anyways. add an extra $2.50 to that for international shipping
