Yeah Jayz, you're on the right track. Since it's your first laser, I'd just try to find a cheap DVD burner somewhere. The faster the write speed, the better (16x, 20x, etc). Then hopefully you have some tools to extract the diode like screwdrivers and pliers.

i went and got one for 5 quid not sure of the speed i just asked for there cheepest one annyway uhh dissasembling it uhh spectaulaly faild -_- and the diode kinda shot across the room hit the wall and bounched on to my pc desk so i am 99% sure i kiled it alltho my cuircets for the driver will hopefully cvome in a day r 2 ill keep it arround till then so i can test just to make 100% sure its dead,.. however failing that maybe someone here can set up a cheep thing i can buy so i just need to attatch it to the driver or something im not exactly expirienced at soldoring iether and sieng how small the diode is i know id mess that up 2 ^^!

The goggles are for eye safety. Outside you won't need them as much as long as you don't shine the laser into anything reflective (car headlights on a parked car, for example) but inside there are a lot more ways to be blinded, so they're a pretty good investment. You need goggles made to filter out the 650nm wavelength.

you probably will kill it your first time, you should have ordered more than one. i would bet everyone on this forum, even the experts, fried a few diodes when they were first starting off
