You can easily damage your eye with a 5mW laser if you tried. 5mW is considered safe because if you shine yourself on accident your blink reflex will kick in before damage is done. Higher power lasers require glasses because they can do damage in the fraction of a second it takes you to blink. Don't skimp on glasses. If you can't afford glasses than you sure cant afford this hobby.

Im 14 ...barely I've built my own red and I have proper safety glasses I dont think you should judge on age but maturity. there are tons of people older than me that I would never trust with my laser in there hands

Sorry for the rant just kinda set me off I don't mean to offend

I tend to think that a older person say 25+ thinks a lot more regarding consequences & hazards associated with lasers than what a 16 year old does.

That's how i look at it, good job on the safety glasses at 14 tho :)

I'm 10, and so far I've blinded 0 people

That has to be some kind of record right?

Its true that you have to judge on maturity and not age, but, we have never seen you in real life so we have nothing to judge by

Better safe then sorry I guess :)

There is also a certain level of mental maturity that simply does not develop until a certain age. The brain is constantly changing throughout the lifespan and the ability to think abstractly and to foresee the full consequences of ones actions usually does not come until early adulthood. Why do you think you see so many teens in huge car wrecks or killed in some other crazy stunt.

You can be a mature youth and be taught the proper safety techniques for things but its pretty hard to overcome biology in all circumstances.

I think you have some to judge on mange not much because I haven't been around hear long but its pretty easy to figure out when people say will sunglasses work / homade googles.....

compared to when peoples first post is there completed first laser and saying how great there eagle pair of safety goggles is. Because it shows that the person had enough patience to read hundreds of threads instead of starting new pointless ones and asking stupid questions that they could of found the answer too in "the I want to build a laser thread"

And I completely agree like my math teacher said when I was taking math with the ninth graders in seventh grad " your so young that your brain Gantt matured enough to wrap your head arou.d these very abreast ideas but dint worry ghoul get it eventually"

( I wasn't doing so hot in Herr class )

If u finished my post fantatic pereverence
