685nm 35mW Laser Diodes on Ebay!

Hi All,

Just found something on Ebay:

3x 685nm 35mW for 10$ + 3$ shipping.

Red Laser Diode 685nm 35mW with len FLD6A2TK (lot of 3) | eBay

Be good for Wavelength collectors. Is there a big difference in color between 650nm/660nm to 685nm.? I know it will be less visible but is it much deeper.?

Well, I got some; (they're not here yet)- i'll let you know.. Interesting with the two lead design and hopefully they wont be too hard to get out of the metal housing.
 
Thanks I picked some up too Just now i could not resist. I new you would be interested in them as i remember you said you collect wavelengths :) as well as a few others.

I dont think it will be hard to remove. It seems like a little wiggle and they will pop right out.:)

It seems like a Great deal.

After 405, 445, 532, 635, 650/660, what's the most financially feasible for a pointer form factor, and a reasonably visible beam?
 
Wow. that's tough. I'd go 473 next, and 589 after that. I can see 473@50mW just fine.. That's not cheap, but its cheaper than a lot of other things.

My "10mW" 589 from CNI wasn't cheap, but it ended up being more like "100mW".

473 and 589 are available in pointers; Things like 561, 671, and others, are not.

473 really is unique in a lot of ways and if you've only seen 445 and 532, I think you'll like it. And it's certainly available in pointer factors; and through GBs and some of Laserglow's holiday sales (probably wont see one for another year) -- they're potentially within reach...

Shortly after that of course is 589...

I usually go for the PGL-III-C form factor though unfotunately...

I wish I didn't have to sell my 473nm. 160+mW peaks from a portable 473nm!
One day I'll be able to afford another 473nm laser. I'd probably go for something lower power though.

Yellow (589nm) is a bit more costly but it is actually a very bright wavelength. I would say it is my third favorite wavelength after 473nm and 532nm first.

I've been tempted by that 473 on ebay for $75 at 10mw that a few people here have ordered.
(lab surplus from med equipment. Not portable) Just seeing the wavelength, even at low power from a stationary unit would be nice :)

I've been playing with equivalent been brightness figures a bunch recently, and it seems like at 593 I'd be really happy with 30 or so mw. I mean, who am I kidding, I'd be *happy* with even 1mw, but it seems like a 30mw 593 should be fairly visible?

I'm not sure if 30mW 593nm portables are available, at least not without significant cost.
589nm is much more stable and is a tiny bit less expensive these days.

I purchased some of the 685nm diodes by the way. Now I just need to figure out what to put 'em in. I plan on driving one of these suckers at 55mW. Ideally it will push the wavelength toward 700nm.
 
It must have been a 20mw not 30mw I was reading up on. Or maybe I was looking at 589 and just mixed them up.

Silly question, but how big is the whole thing? I don't have a ton of space to setup something permanent in my apartment.

How feasible do you think it would be to swap out the 1.5 w ir diode for like a 4w?

Shoot, I'm still in the learning and tinkering stage, and personally have no idea. it is 6 inches long 3 inches wide at its widest point and 3 inches height( just the head)

the driver board is like 6x6x3 (at longest, widest, and highest points)

It will look identical to 660 in color, just as 780 looks identical to 660 in color

I'll pick a set up and get a wavelength reading when I get a chance.

From what I've read the diode that it has is 2 watts, and even if you did switch out the 2 watt for a 4 watt I don't think it would increase the power by an amount that would be significant enough to be worth it. In fact, It might not increase at all, because the crystals in it are only able to do so much. Many of them have been able to produce up to 30mW's and are very stable, which is pretty darn sweet for 87 bucks. IMO :cool:
